Traditional Birthstones for Each Month

You might think that birthstones are only associated with the Zodiac signs. This is not exactly true. They are also associated with what month you are born in. The origin of the twelve monthly birthstones was thought to have originated in Bible as they were found on the breastplates of Aaron.

Yet another difference between the monthly and the Zodiac stones is that the monthly stones have more a numerological association whereas the Zodiac stones relate more to astrology.

January - The garnet is named as the January birth stone in just about every tradition or culture The glittering red garnet is the stone representing January in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions. In the ancient Hindu tradition the stone for January was the serpent stone, but this is not a stone that has been seen by anyone. Chances are it was a ruby or a black stone.

February - The symbolic stone is agreed upon as being the amethyst according to North American, Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions. In ancient Hindu it was the chandrakankta which once again is a stone nobody living today has ever seen so it cannot be described.

March - Modern North America culture names the aquamarine as the stone for this month. However in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions the stone for this stormy month is the bloodstone. In the ancient Hindu tradition it was a stone called gold-sivalinga which once again is not a stone ever seen by contemporary eyes.

April - North American culture names the diamond as the birth stone for April. In Jewish, Hindu and Polish cultures the diamond is also named as the April birthstone. However in Roma, Persian and Russian traditions, the stone that has symbolized the month is sapphire.

May - In contemporary North American, Arabic, Hindu, Polish and Russian traditions, the birthstone for the month of May is emerald. However the Hebrew and Roman traditions say the month belongs to the agate.

June - June is one of those months that seem to be symbolized by an array of stones. Contemporary North American culture names the stone of the month to be moonstone, pearl or alexandrite. Ancient Hindu tradition also names the pearl as the birthstone for June. However in ancient Roman and Hebrew traditions June was ruled by the emerald (possibly because the green represented summer.) In Russian, Polish and Arabic cultures the stone that rules this month is agate, which to make things even more confusing is a striped stone comes in many colors.

July - In North American, Polish and Russian culture the birthstone for this mid summer month is ruby. In Hebrew and Roman traditions it is onyx. The Arabic culture assigns the carnelian to July and the Hindu religion says a sapphire represents this month.

August - Many different stones are often said to belong to the month of August. The modern North American tradition says the month is symbolized by peridot. The Hebrew and Roman traditions attribute it to the carnelian. The Arabic and Polish traditions say the month belongs to the sardonyx. The Hindu tradition assigns August the ruby and the Russian tradition assigns it the alexandrite.

September - In modern North American traditions, this autumn month is said to be ruled by the sapphire. However in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions peridot is given as the ruling stone. The Hindu tradition assigns the zircon to September.

October - The opal or the tourmaline is usually assigned to October. However Hebrew, Roman, Arabic and Polish birth gem stone traditions say that aquamarine is the symbolic stone. The Russian culture says the month is ruled by the beryl. Ancient Hindu tradition says the stone is coral.

November - The North American tradition assigns either yellow topaz or citrine as the gemstones for this month. The Hebrew, Roman, Arabic and Russian traditions also say it belongs to topaz. November is symbolized by the cat's eye in the Hindu culture.

December - The North American tradition says December is symbolized by three choices of three blue stones: tanzanite, turquoise or blue topaz. The Hindu religion also assigns it to topaz, and the Russian and Polish traditions assign it to turquoise. The Arabic, Roman and Hebrew traditions say the rosy colored ruby rules this month.

This is interesting because very often your choice of a Zodiac stone will conflict with what is the birth month stone. Some of the stones also cross over to astrology. For instance if you are born in November the symbolic stone is topaz and if you are a Sagittarian born after the 23rd then your stone will be at topaz as well.

Crystals and Astrology by Scarlett Kat

These are crystals stones that are said to be of particular benefit to
and/or are associated with those born under each sign of the zodiac in
western astrology.

These associated crystals are often preferred by people of the related
astrological sign. Sometimes, though, they aren't at all. This can be
due to the fact that one's astrological sign is really just one
portion, generally the Sun sign, of their entire astrological chart.
Other factors in their individual chart may mean that they prefer and
go well with other stones altogether. The stones shown for a particular
sign can be placed on their associated chakras, worn, or carried.

Because a stone is listed as related to or benefitting a particular
sign, doesn't mean it's the only crystals that will be a benefit, or
that they anyone has to use it. As with all things, trust your higher
self above all.

Crystals for the Zodiac Signs by Rev. Carol A. Ingle (Raven)

Crystals for the Zodiac Signs

Aquarius

Amethyst, or for January Aquarians, maybe Aquamarine or Garnet. Garnets are grounding. Especially good if you have more air in your chart. Fluorite will be great for the higher mind and working around computers. Most Aquarians love electronics. Fluorite is very good for us. Try meditating with Sugilite, Carnelian, or holding a pair of Boji stones. Unconventional, but perfect for us. Carry Aventurine for luck this year. Wear Rhodochrosite to attract love. For business and attracting money Malachite will be the best for Aquarians.

Pisces

Pisces, Aquamarine will protect and lift your energy level. Sodalite will keep your third eye open. A Lingam, temple stone, will be powerful in your meditations and prayers. Keep one close. This summer protect yourself with Kyanite, Citrine, or Black Tourmaline. With all the energy coming, sensitive Pisces people will need to protect themselves. You will feel so much, and that's okay; for everything is in divine order, even when it seems out of order. Love will always prevail. You will feel lucky wearing a Malachite or Green Tourmaline pendent or ring. Or just carry a piece.

Aries

Fiery Aries, you will draw love with a Rose Quartz and Garnet combination. And so will the other fiery signs (Leo and Sagittarius). It will be good to carry or wear Tiger Eye to attract money. This year you will need very little help in business, but it never hurts to visualize success. Nobody can stop an Aries when your mind is made up. Stay calm with Moonstone.

Taurus

Wonderful Taurus. I have never met a Taurus that didn't love Amethyst. Creative people just love purple. Wear, carry, bathe with, and even sleep with Amethyst this year. Green Jade will attract love; and for success and attracting money wear a Green Tourmaline. You will love the results!

Gemini

Fun loving Gemini, you should wear Pink Tourmaline for love this year. How do I know? Quit thinking so much, and just feel a Pink Tourmaline - you will love it! You will be grounded and in focus if you carry or wear Agate. Try putting a Carnelian in the four corners of your bed for incredible spiritual insights and powerful dreams. These words are just flowing - Gemini, I know you understand. For luck, try a Green Jasper.

Cancer

Cancer, you and Pisces need a protective stone. Sapphire or Citrine would work fine. All the signs, all of us, will feel the intensity of the energy coming. Protection is vital for us all. Cancer's love stones are Rose Quartz, Ruby Crystal and Pink Kunzite. Buy fresh blue berries and eat them once a week, or wear a Lapis Lazuli close to your throat; either will open your third eye or keep it open. Kunzite will bring harmony as well as love.

Leo

Dramatic Leo, Oh how loved you are. A power pendant will help you shine. Not that you need help, but enhance your energy with Moldavite and Herkimer Diamond. Or try a large Polish Zincite pendant. These powerful stones will work well with you. Find a crystal ball for gazing and relaxation. A Quartz cluster will bring harmony into your home. Attract love with a Rose Quartz and Clear Quartz combo.

Virgo

Spring clean, Virgo, and I don't mean your house. Drink a lot of water and wear a Clear Quartz or Rutilated Quartz for clarity. If your stomach feels uncomfortable, wear a Yellow Citrine on a long cord or chain. It will release fear, anger, or any accumulated resentment. You are too smart, Virgo. Words to try... Feel, Feel, Feel. Use intuition to pick your stone for love. A lucky stone for you is a Meteorite. The energy will feel very familiar to you.

Libra

Libra, yes, you are beautiful and handsome when you are in balance. Get rid of those frown lines with a Malachite. Love comes to you, but a Green Tourmaline or Kunzite is helpful. Sit quietly with Rose Quartz in one hand and Malachite in the other. Find your center, Libra. You and your loved ones will be happy you did. For luck this year, carry Aventurine or Citrine. A Garnet will be grounding, and Clear Quartz will keep your mind clear. Having trouble making up your mind? Carry or put a Purple Fluorite next to your bed. Most of all, Libra, keep smiling with a happy Herkimer Diamond or Sugilite.

Scorpio

Scorpio, you don't need help with opening your third eye, but it never hurts to stay open and in balance with Azurite-Malachite. Very important, especially if you have Libra rising. For protection use Citrine. It will help you not to push emotions down to your Solar plexus. Try wearing Aqua Aura or Sodalite to help express those deep emotions. For attracting love, wear or carry Rhodochrosite or Kunzite.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius, if you feel like travel this year, carry Moonstone with you. Your love stone is Ruby or Ruby Crystal. If you wear it, wear it over your heart chakra. Keep plenty of Clear Quartz around for clear thinking and energy. Your lucky stone is Citrine. It's okay if it is not natural (imitations are made by heating Amethyst), as the color yellow will bring you luck. Orange Calcite will give you very spiritual meditations.

Capricorn

Capricorns will enjoy success with a Blood Stone pendant, or carrying one will also be positive. It will give you the courage to take a few risks. For health, your birthstone, Garnet will be effective. Hold a Clear Quartz in your left hand and visualize what you want - love, money, whatever your heart's desire. Write if you feel the need, and have a Sodalite on your left or wear one while writing. May all your dreams come true, Capricorn.

The light that shines brightest from
the depths of all darkness is the one
that glows within us all.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
