A pendulum is a very basic tool used for divination. A pendulum consists only of a chain with a heavy object at one end, usually a pointed object. For practice, you can use a necklace or a heavy object, such as a screw nut, tied to the end of a piece of string. For more advanced work, however, you will need something more suitable. There are a number of pendulums on the market today, but making your own is much simpler. I prefer to use my own jewelry. If you have a special pendant dedicated to your craft which you always wear, I suggest using it as your pendulum. You can also use a polished crystal or stone hung from a chain. Some witches use polished crystal or stone points for certain purposes. For example, a rose quartz point would be particularly useful in love divination. A point of bloodstone would be most useful for healing divination.
A pendulum is a tool that hones in on the psychic powers within each of us. A pendulum can also be used to obtain information that has been lost to us through repressed memories or have been forgotten. Pendulums can also be used to reveal truths that we already know, but have not come to terms with.
Pendulum Lesson 1:
Create a card which looks like this. You may draw this on any piece of paper you like with any type of pen. This card will be used only for learning and practice. The "y" stands for "yes." The "n," stands for "no." The "m" stands for "maybe."
Begin by laying your card down on a flat surface. For this exercise you may use a pendulum made from anything you like. The symbolism is not important at this point. Rest your elbow on the table (or whatever surface you are working on) and hang your pendulum by its end from between your thumb and forefinger, so that it hangs over, but does not touch the paper. The pendulum should be about 1/4 inch above the paper. Do not lift your elbow off of the table.
First, swing the pendulum back and forth along the y axis. Say aloud "this means 'yes'." Now stop the pendulum. Swing it along the n axis. Say aloud "this means 'no'." Stop the pendulum again. Swing the pendulum in a circle and say "this means 'maybe'." Stop the pendulum once more. It is important that you remember to always repeat this part of the exercise before performing any work with a pendulum.
Now hold your pendulum over the card and hold your hand steady, but try to keep it relaxed. Say aloud "show me a 'yes'." Your pendulum will very slowly, very gradually begin to swing. After a few seconds, you will notice that your pendulum is swinging along the yes axis without you moving your hand at all.
Now say aloud "show me a 'no'." You will notice that your pendulum begins to spin and then very soon, it will begin to swing horizontally across the no axis. It is very important that you be sure not to move your hand at all. Do not force the pendulum to swing. Try to hold you hand still.
Say aloud "show me a 'maybe'." Again, you will see that the pendulum seems to obey. Practice this and the pendulum will obey each time.
Using Your Pendulum
Pendulums can be used to answer simple yes and no questions. This is easily done by asking the question and then viewing the pendulum to see how it will respond. It is very important that you do not let your personal desires control the movement of the pendulum. Just because you want to hear a "yes" in answer to your question, doesn't mean that forcing the pendulum to say "yes" will make it true.
Pendulums are also commonly used to find things. In the past, pendulums have been held over maps to find deposits of water and minerals. The pendulum is asked to find a certain deposit and then moved very slowly over the map until it makes a "yes" motion or a circular motion in some cases.
Pendulum Lesson 2:
Draw a large map of your bedroom (as seen from above) as precise as you can and include furniture, windows, and doors in your drawing. Have a friend hide an object in your room while you are not looking. Use the pendulum over the map to try and determine where the object is hidden. Clear your mind of all things except the object. Hold the pendulum over the map and slowly move the pendulum over the map. When the pendulum begins to swing in a "yes" motion, check that area to see if the object is there. This will take some practice. Take turns with your partner hiding and finding the object. With practice, you will learn to clear your mind and hone in on your abilities. You may find that you become quite good at it.
Pendulums can be used for a variety of things. You can use a pendulum over the body to discover which chakra is out of balance, or what area needs to be healed during illness. You can use a pendulum over a map to discover lost objects. You can even use your pendulum for simple yes and no questions.

DEALING WITH THE PENDULUM
The pendulum is basically an amplifier. It is a tool that helps you to access the collective unconscious and your Higher Self. You can get answers to anything you can come up with.
Every one is basically capable of working with the pendulum. Learning to work with it is like learning to play an instrument. It requires constant practice and experimentation Making mistakes is part of the learning process. The results you get will reflect your stage of spiritual/mental development.
You should not use the pendulum for egoistic reasons. Use it only for the well being of others or yourself.
REMEMBER: Swinging the pendulum requires that you be undivided and totally present in the moment.
TYPES OF PENDULUMS
Depending what are they used for, they can be for: healing specific illnesses, for adjusting chakras, teleradiesthesia (distance healing, map dowsing).
They can also be: Simple: tear drop, ball-shaped, conical, spiral, made from brass, copper, crystal, wood, ceramic.
Or with their own radiation: Universal Pendulum, Osiris, Isis, Karnak, Mer-Isis, Atlantis...
SELECTING OR MAKING A PENDULUM
When selecting a pendulum follow your intuition and choose one that you like. You can make a pendulum yourself if you take a thread and hang a weigh on it which can be any object you like. The thread can be 15 to 20 cm long. Tie a knot in the thread at the length where the swing of the pendulum feels the best.
PROGRAMMING THE PENDULUM
You can ask about anything you like with the pendulum if the question can be answered with YES or NO. But first you have to determine what each pendulum movement means for you.
Take a seated position at a desk or table. Place you feet flat on the floor resting your elbow on the desk. Hold the pendulum by the end of chain between your thumb and index finger. Make sure that your upper body and back are straight, that the energy can flow freely. Put your other hand flat on the table. Relax. Let your breath flow calmly. Make sure before you start that you will be undistracted. Do not swing the pendulum when you are tired.
Hold your pendulum over the center of the illustration shown below and you ask: “What does a YES look like?” than “What does a NO look like?”
The pendulum can turn in the following directions: up-down, left-right or in a circle.
Practice several times a day for at least a week. Once you have determined your YES and NO do not deviate from it. When you programmed your pendulum test it. Prove to yourself that it really works. Ask questions you already know the answer. Otherwise always assume an unattached and unbiased attitude.
When you have determined a clear Yes and No, ask your pendulum how it swings for “I do not want to answer” or “I can not answer that.”
REMEMBER: a correct answer will follow only when the question is asked in the right way.
TESTING THE PENDULUM
You should test your pendulum for accuracy before you begin to work. Use a numbered chart 1-100% and ask how accurate your pendulum is. The ideal would be 100%. If it is below 60% do not swing the pendulum, ask about the reasons or try some other time when rested and calm.
REMEMBER: the answer you get refer to the present moment only. It can partially or completely change at another time or place.
OTHER WAYS TO USE THE PENDULUM
You can place your pendulum directly over an object and test it. You may want to test your water, groceries, medications, gemstones, flower remedies, determine what therapies are good for you by writing down the name of couple of them. You can test the energy of your house, evaluate your sleeping space, and more.
In order to work easier with the pendulum, you can work with charts, like the Meditation Techniques, Color, Past and Future Life, Homeopathy, Aromatherapy Oils, Tea or Chakra Chart, just to mention a few.
Pendulum Divination By Patti Wigington
A pendulum is one of the simplest and easiest forms of divination. It's a simple matter of Yes/No questions being asked and answered. Although you can purchase pendulums commercially, ranging from about $15 - $60, it's not hard to make one of your own. Typically, most people use a crystal or stone, but you can use any object that's got a bit of weight to it.
Make Your Own Pendulum
If you decide to make your own pendulum, you'll need a few basic supplies:
A crystal or other stone
Jeweler's wire
A lightweight chain
Take the crystal and wrap it in a length of jeweler's wire. When you're done wrapping it, leave a loop at the top. Attach one end of the chain to the loop. You'll want to make sure the chain isn't too long, because you'll probably be using it over a table or other surface. Generally, a chain between 10 - 14" is perfect. Also, be sure you tuck in any poky pieces of wire so you don't jab yourself later.
Charge Your Pendulum
To charge your pendulum, place it overnight in water or salt. Remember that some crystals will degrade in salt, so be sure to check before you do this. Another option is to leave the pendulum outside overnight in the moonlight.
Calibrate Your Pendulum
To calibrate your pendulum simply means you're checking it to see how it's working. To do this, hold it by the free end of the chain so that the weighted end is loose. Make sure you keep it perfectly still. Ask a simple Yes/No question to which you already know the answer is Yes, such as "Am I female?" or "Do I live in California?"
Keep your eye on the pendulum, and when it starts moving, note whether it goes side to side, forwards to backwards, or some other direction. This indicates your "Yes" direction.
Now, repeat the process, asking a question to which you know the answer is No. This will give you your "No" direction. It's a good idea to do this a few times with different questions, so you can get a feel for how your pendulum responds to you. Some will swing horizontally or vertically, others swing in small or large circles, others don't do a whole lot unless the answer is really important. Once you've calibrated your pendulum and gotten to know it a bit, you can use it for some basic divination.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.
Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.
Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.
As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.
We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.
Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.
Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.
Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"
A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?
After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...
Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
