Our steel hilts are currently available in several models, finishes, and guard types. This allows for a range of customization to meet the buyer's requirements. All hilts come in either a factory blue black or wire brushed gray finish. Rod tang blades are mounted with wooden grips banded at both ends to eliminate splitting. These come in a natural wood or black stain finish. Other colors are available on request. Flat tang blades now come with wooden slab grips unless otherwise noted. Longer heavier rod tang blades are shipped with a 12 ounce (338g) ball pommel. A lighter 7 3/8 ounce (210g) ball pommel is available upon request. We also offer a 16 ounce (444g) truncated cone pommel for use with very heavy rod tang blades. For an example of this, please see the photo on our Long Blades & Hilts page. Flat tang blades are mounted with pommels of appropriate weight. We currently produce two perforation patterns. The first of these is based on a Pappenheimer rapier in the collection of the Cleveland Museum Of Art.

Small Sword Hilts

In the above photo you will see an example of our smallsword hilt. These are often referred to as civilian or court swords, since they were worn around town or on formal occasions. This is mounted on one of our blades, and may also be fitted to an epee. Smallswords appeared in the late 17th century and were popular throughout the 18th century. Our hilts may be purchased unbladed, or mounted on any rod tang blade. This design consists of a knuckle guard, and a pair of annallet (finger rings) protected by filled and pierced flat shells. The annalet is large enough to accomodate one finger. We have optional smaller annalets which are used simply to give edge control. The shells may be ordered in either the pappenheimer or mercenary (hearts and spades) piercework.

Katzbalger Hilts

The above is a photo of our katzbalger model series of hilts. This design was popular with the German Landsknechts of the 16th Century. Our hilt has a long cross guard twisted and bent to form a closed horizontal S shape, when viewed with the sword held point down. We manufacture these in several variations. The example on the left is the standard hilt. In the middle is the same hilt with an added perforated plate for extra hand protection. The added plate costs an additional $10. The example on the right has a slightly smaller plate with a false ricasso allowing one finger to be hooked over the guard for better point control. The added plate and false ricasso cost an additional $15. The katzbalger hilt may also be mounted on a dagger blade. For blade specifications, follow the Dagger Blades & Hilts link.

Scarf Sword Hilts

The scarf sword depicted on the left above has an all steel guard and grip. We can substutute a hard wood grip at the same price as on the sword depicted above on the right. Several years ago one of our suppliers cut and shipped us several hundred of a discontinued dagger guard by mistake. These have been collecting dust and rust on a shelf in our shop. It recently occurred to me that these could be cleaned up, finished, and mounted on our flat tang blade to make what was known in the early 1600s as a scarf sword. Scarf swords were so named since they were carried tied in the knot of a sash worn over one shoulder or wrapped around the waist of military officers, as was the fashion of the time. Collecters sometimes refer to swords of this type as town or pillow swords. The latter names were given since in the days before reliable small firearms, they were supposedly worn by civilians when out on the streets, or kept near the bed or even under the pillow for defence of the home against intruders. Our product is basically a small rapier at the price of a dagger. Scarf swords were simple, consisting of a short cross guard, grip, pommel and a light blade. Ours comes with a 36 inch long blade a 10 ounce pommel and wooden slab grips. Blades may be ordered as short as 24 inches in length. Comparing our scarf hilts to other models mounted on similar blades, inch for inch the scarf sword is our lightest rapier.

Katana Hilt

The above is a photo of our katana. These are made with an 11 inch long wood grip, steel guard (tsuba), and steel grip band and butt cap. Blades may be ordered straight or slightly curved, in lengths from 30 inches up to 40 inches. Extra curve can be added for an additional charge of $10. Turkic Hilts

 

The above is a photo of our Turkic hilt. The example on the left is mounted on our Alchem Safeflex blade, while the example on the right is mounted on our flat tanged blade. This design was common in Asia and Eastern Europe from the 13th century on. These are made with an off white or black nylon or wood grip and steel guard and butt cap and have a 5 1/2 inch grip length. Both the Alchem rod tang Safeflex and the Alchem flat tang blades may be ordered with a slight curve, under 1" offset, at no additional charge. More curve may be added to our blades for an additional charge of $10. Either blade can be ordered in lengths from 30 to 36 inches.

Grosse Messer Sword Hilts

Above is a photo of our grosse messer sword hilt. This example is set up for use in the left hand. These may be ordered mounted on our Alchem or Safeflex long blades. Blades may be straight or curved. Our hilt consists simply of an 11 3/4 inch long cross guard with one open (unfilled) side ring, a grip and pommel. The side ring measures 2 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide. An optional perforated plate is available to cover the side ring for an additional charge of $5. This perforated plate is removable when mounted on one of our threaded rod tang blades. Guards may be ordered straight (I), serpentine (S), or curved forward (C shaped). When ordering be sure to specify whether the sword is to be held in the left or right hand. We provide the same hilt mounted on our Safeflex dagger blade.
