Nobody is completely sure where the tradition of birth gem stones comes from but many biblical scholars and anthropologists seem to think that their original assignments came from symbolism on the Breast of Aaron. The Breastplate of Aaron was a one of a kind ritual garment that was set with twelve gemstones. They corresponded with the twelve months of the year and the twelve months of the Zodiac. However since the times before Christ there have been many different systems for determining which birth stones belong to which month. Here is a breakdown of the birthstone gemstones as they are assigned to each month by different cultures and beliefs

January-
If you were born in the month of January then just about every tradition include the modern North American one names the garnet as your birth stone. Garnet is the stone for this month in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions. In the ancient Hindu tradition the stone for January is the serpent stone. Nobody is quite sure what a serpent stone actually is but it is probably a ruby to symbolize the snake's glittering red eyes.

In terms of the Zodiac, if you were born from January 1st to January 22nd then you were born under the sign of Capricorn and your birthstone would be a ruby! . If you were born after the 23rd, your sign is Aquarius and your Zodiac birthstone would be a garnet.

February-
If you were born in the month of February then your birth stone is the amethyst according to just about every tradition including the modern North American, Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions. In ancient Hindu it was one of the many Indian birth gem stones that are not known to us today. It was called the chandrakankta.

In terms of the Zodiac if you were born before February 22rd you belong to the sign of Aquarius and your Zodiac gem stone would be garnet. If you were born on the 23rd and then you belong to the sign of Pisces and your zodiac gemstone would be the same as your birth month - the amethyst!

March-
The birthstone gemstones vary a little more for the month of March. The modern North American stone for this month is aquamarine. However in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions it is the bloodstone. In the ancient Hindu tradition it was a stone unknown to us today called gold-sivalinga.

If you were born before March 22nd then you belong to the sign of Pisces and your birth gem stone would be the amethyst. If you were born after March 22nd your Zodiac you belong to the sign of Aries and your gemstone would be the bloodstone.

April-
The modern North American birth stone for the month of April is a diamond. However in Hebrew, Roman Arabic and Russian traditions it is a sapphire. The Hindu and Polish traditions believe this month's birth stone is the diamond.

If your birth date falls before March 22nd, your Zodiac gemstone is bloodstone as you belong to the sign of Aries. If you were born on or after March 23rd then you are a Taurus and your birthstone is emerald.

May-
In modern North American, Arabic, Hindu, Polish and Russian traditions birthstone for the month of May is emerald. However the Hebrew and Roman traditions say the month belongs to the agate.

If you were born before May 22nd then you belong to the sign of Taurus and your birthstone is the emerald. If you were born on or after May 23rd then your birth sign is Gemini and your birthstone is agate.

June-
June is one of the more confusing months when it comes to gem birth stones. In the modern North American tradition the birthstone is considered to be moonstone or alexandrite. In Hebrew and Roman traditions it is the emerald. In Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions the month is ruled by agate. The Hindu tradition says the pearl rules it.

If you were born before June 22nd then you are a Gemini and your zodiac birthstone is agate. If you were born on or after the 23rd your zodiac birthstone is emerald, which belongs to the sign of Cancer.

July-
In North American, Polish and Russian traditions the birth stone for this month is ruby. In Hebrew and Roman traditions it is onyx. The Arabic culture assigns the carnelian to July and the Hindu religion assigns the month to sapphire.

If you were born before July 22nd then you are a Cancer and your zodiac stone is emerald. If you are born after the 23rd your birthstone is onyx, which belongs to the sign of Leo.

August-
This is another one of these confusing months where many different stones are correlated to it. The modern North American tradition says the month is symbolized by peridot. The Hebrew and Roman traditions attribute it to the carnelian. The Arabic and Polish traditions say the month belongs to the sardonyx. The Hindu tradition assigns August the ruby and the Russian tradition assigns it the alexandrite.

If you were born before August 22nd you are a Leo and your zodiac birthstone is onyx. If you were born on or after August 22nd then you are a Virgo and your birthstone is carnelian.

September-
In modern traditions, this month is said to be ruled by the sapphire. However in Hebrew, Roman, Arabic, Polish and Russian traditions the month is assigned to the peridot. The Hindu tradition assigns the zircon to be the talismanic stone for September.

If you were born before September 22nd you are a Virgo and your zodiac birthstone is carnelian. If you were born on or after September 23rd you are Libra and your zodiac stone is peridot.

October-
This is another one of these months with two modern North American choices: the opal or the tourmaline. However many other traditions say the month belongs to the aquamarine including the Hebrew, Roman, Arabic and Polish birth gem stone traditions. The Russian culture says the month is ruled by the Beryl and the ancient Hindu tradition assigns the month to coral.

If you were born before October 22nd you are a Libra and your zodiac birthstone is peridot. If you are born on or after October 23rd you are a Scorpio and your zodiac gem stone is beryl.

November-
The North American tradition assigns either the citrine or the topaz as birthstone gemstones for this month. The Hebrew, Roman, Arabic and Russian traditions also say it belongs to topaz. The month is assigned the cat's eye in the Hindu culture.

If you were born before November 23rd you are a Scorpio and your zodiac gem stone is beryl. If you are born on or after the 23rd you are a Sagittarius and your gem stone is topaz.

December-
This is another confusing month as the modern North American tradition says December is symbolized by three stones: tanzanite, turquoise or blue topaz. The Hindu religion also assigns it to topaz (any color) and the Russian and Polish traditions assign it to turquoise. The Arabic, Roman and Hebrew traditions say the ruby rules this month.

If you were born before December 23rd you are a Scorpio and your luckiest of birth gemstones is the beryl. If you are born on or after the 23rd you are a Capricorn and your zodiac stone is the ruby.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
