In the beginning, a civilization called the Hallstatt Culture was born in Central Europe (in the region comprising Austria, Germany, Czech, Poland, Hungary) in around 3000 BC—the beginning of the Bronze Age. This civilization was the Celtic Civilization.

A king named Mil Espaine (‘soldier of Hispania’) and his wife Scota –who had 12 sons called the Milesians— lived in Iberia i.e. the land comprising Spain and Portugal (including a region called Basque). The Iberian king and his family went voyaging and landed on the shores of Ireland. In Ireland, they became ancestors of the ‘Gaelic’ people/Gaels.

***Thus, the Gaels and Celts are basically Spanish in origin. Recent DNA research has also proved this.***

***But before the Gaels came in, Ireland was also occupied by the indigenous race of the Picts – the proto-Celtic people whose history largely remains unknown. The Picts were known as the ‘painted or tattooed warriors’.***

***The Gaels and the Picts intermingled and by 400 AD, had spread completely to new lands including Scotland (named after Queen Scota of Iberia) and Wales and Old Britain.***

***This is the period of the growth of Irish Mythology—including the Fae, Tuatha, sidhe seers, changelings, Druids, Fianna warriors, etc—the period from late Bronze Age to early Middle Ages.***

Switch to Bronze Age: Hellenistic Greece, where we saw the Trojan War (possibly 1200 BC) between Paris of Troy [today, Turkey] and Menelaus of Sparta [today, Greece] over Helen. But with the fall of Troy, a large section of the Trojan populace migrated to North Germany, and settled in a region called Francia. They were called the Frankish tribes of Germany.

Simultaneously, a new civilization—The Ancient Roman Empire (whose origins are mythologically placed on Romulus in Unknown BC, Bronze Age] – began to acquire new lands, supplanting the glory of the shattered Hellenistic Age. The Romans routed the Gaels and Picts and came to settle down in Old Britain, now called Britannia.

Historians call the period of 300-700 AD as the Migration Age. This Age saw the movement of several barbarian Germanic tribes from Germany to other parts of Europe (out of fear of Chengiz Khan and his Huns):

1. The Angles of Germany (settled in an ‘angular’ shaped region of German river valley, whose name gave ‘Eng’ in ‘England’) invaded Roman empire’s Britain around 500 AD.

2. The Saxons of Germany (named so due to their peculiar weapon/knife) too invaded Roman-Britain in 500 AD.

3. The Franks of Germany defeated (and invaded) the Celtic and Roman populations in land today comprising France. This was the ‘Frankish Empire’.

Many wars were fought between the Anglo-Saxons and the Celts, most primary being the one spearheaded by King Arthur. So, now, in this still pre-Christian era, Britannia is occupied by Anglo-Saxons who go on a cleansing spree to remove genealogies of Celts, Romans, Basque,

***Gauls (Gauls were the Celts who moved to modern-day France from Iberia) and Gaels and Picts.***

In 900 AD, a new tide brings in the Viking invaders from Scandinavia [Iceland+ Finland+ Denmark + Norway + Sweden]. These Vikings are also called the Norsemen (or the Men from the North). The Vikings invaded Normandy, a small region in the Frankish Empire.

The Vikings then intermingled with the routed Celts, Romans and Franks and together made up the race called ‘The Normans’.

What follows then is of course the Norman Conquest of Britain—launched by the Norman, William the Conqueror, in 1066 AD, completely routing the Anglo-Saxons.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
