Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture



Cassia

Historical Data – Rich Biblical history. Mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century B.C.) an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

Medicinal Properties – Anti-Inflammatory (COX2 inhibitor), antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anticoagulant

Uses - cataracts, fungal infections (ringworm, candida), atherosclerosis, arterosclerosis

Exodus 30:23,24,25 – Take thou also unto the principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: And thou shalt make it an oil of holy anointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

Psalm 45:8 – “All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.”



Cedarwood

Historical Data – Throughout antiquity, cedarwood has been used in medicines. The Egyptians used I for embalming the dead. It was used as botha traditional medicine and incense in Tibet.

Medicall Properties – Combats hair lost (alopecia areata), antibacterial, lymphatic stimulant.

Uses – hair loss, arteriosclerosis, ADHD, skin problems (acne, exzema)

Leviticus 14:4 – “Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed tow birds alive and clean, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop.”

Leviticus 14:6 – “As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them an the living bird in the blood of the bird (that was)killed over the running water.”

Leviticus 14:49 – “And he shall take to cleanse the house tow birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop.”



Cypress

Historical Data – The Phoenicians and Cretans used cypress for building ships and bows, while the Egyptians made sarcophagi from the wood. The Greeks used sypress to carve statues to their gods. The Greek word ‘sempervirens’ for which he botanical name is derived means “live forever.” The tree shares its name with the island of Cypress, where it is used for worship. Legend says the cross of Jesus was made from cypress wood. It is often planted in graveyards.

Medical Properties – Improves circulation and strengthens blood capillaries’ anti-infectious, antispasmodic; discourages fluid retention.

Uses – Diabetes, circulatory disorders, cancer (Jean Valnet, M.D.), grounding, stabilizing.

Fragrant Influences – Eases the feeling of loss and creates a sense of security and grounding. Also helps heal emotional trauma, cals, soothes anger, and helps life flow better. Can help soothe irritating coughs and minor chest discomfort.

Isaiah 44:14 = “He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest” he planteth as ash, and the rain doth nourish it.”



Frankincense

Historical Data – Also known as “olibanum” or “Oil from Lebanon” the name frankincense is derived from the Medieval Fench word for “real incense.” Frankincense is considered the “holy anointing oil” in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. It was well known during the time of Christ for its anointing and healing powers and was one of the gifts given to Christ at His birth. “Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man, “frankincense” was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century B.C.) and ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

Medical Properties – Anti tumoral, immune stimulant, antidepressant, muscle relaxing.

Uses – Depression, cancer, respiratory infections, inflammation, immune-stimulating

Fragrant Influences – Increases spiritual awareness, promotes meditation, improves attitude and uplifts spirits. Frankincense contains sesquiterpenes which stimulate the limbic system of the brain (the center of memory and emotions) and the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. They hypothalamus is the master gland of the human body, producing many vital hormones including thyroid and growth hormone.

There are over 52 references to frankincense (considering that “incense” is translated from the Hebrew/Greek “frankincense” and is referring to the same oil)

Exodus 30:34 – “And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum;these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight.”

Leviticus 2:1 – “And when any will offer a meat offering unto the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour’ and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense theron.”



Galbanum

Historical Data – Mentioned in Egyptian papyri and the Old Testament (Exodus 30:34) it was esteemed for its medicinal and spiritual properties. Dioscorides, an ancient Roman historian, records that galbanum was used for antispasmodic, diuretic, and pain relieving properties.

Medical Properties – Antiseptic, analgesic, and light antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, circulatory stimulant, anticonvulsant.

Uses – Digestive problems (diarrhea), nervous tension , rheumatism, skin conditions, (scar tissue, wrinkles)

Fragrant Influences – Harmonic and balancing, amplifies, spiritual awareness and meditation. When combined with frankincense or sandalwood, the frequency rises dramatically.

Hyssop

Historical Data – While there is some uncertainty they Hyssopus officinalis is the same species of plant the the hyssop referred to in the Bible, there is no question that H. officinalis has been used medicinally for almost a millennium for its antiseptic properties. It has also been used for opening the respiratory system.

Medical Properties – Mucolytic, decongestant, anti-inflammatory, regulates lipid metabolism, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiparasitic

Uses – Respiratory infections/congestion, parasites (expelling worms) viral infections, and circulatory disorders.

Fragrant Influences – Stimulates creativity and meditation

Exodus 12:22 – “And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason’ and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.”

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
