Myrrh

Historical Data - It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Ebers Papyrus (dating from sixteenth century B.C.) an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes. The Arabian people used myrrh for many skin conditions, such as chapped and cracked, anti skin and wrinkles. It was listed in Hildegard’s Medicine, a compilation of early German medicines by highly-regarded Benedictine herbalist Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179)

Medical Properties – Powerful antioxidant, antitumoral, anti inflammatory, anti parasitic, anti, analgesic/anesthetic

Uses – Diabetes, cancer, hepatitis, fungal infections (candida, ringworm, exzema), tooth/gum infections, skin conditions (chapped, cracked, wrinkles, stretch marks)

Fragrant Influences – Promotes spiritual awareness and is uplifting. It contains sesquiterpenes which stimulate the limbic system of the brain (center of memory and emotions) and the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. The hypothalamus is the master gland of the human body, producing many vital hormones including thyroid and growth hormone.

Myrtle

Historical Data – Myrtle has been researched by Dr. Daniel Penoel for normalizing hormonal imbalances of the thyroid and ovaries, as well as balancing the hypothyroid. It has also been researched for its soothing effects on the respiratory system.

Medical Properties – Antimutagenic, liver stimulant, prostate ad thyroid stimulant, sinus/lung decongestant, antispasmodic

Uses – Thyroid problems, throat/lung/sinus infections, prostate problems, skin irritations (acne, blemishes, bruises, oily skin, psoriasis, etc.) muscle spasms.

Fragrant Influence: Elevating and euphoric

Nehemiah 8:15 – “And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.”



Onycha

Historical Data - Although onycha is only mentioned in scripture by name

once, it holds the high position of being an ingredient of the holy incense (Exodus

30:34). Other names for onycha are “benzoin”, “friar’s balm” and “Java frankincense”.



Medical Propeties - Tincture of benzoin was an antiseptic used in hospitals for more than a hundred years

(since the mid 1800s). Onycha may have been used in hospitals but it does NOT have a

hospital smell. It contains vanillin aldehyde, which gives it the pleasant of vanilla.

Onycha was valued anciently for its ability to speed healing of wounds and to help

prevent infection.



Uses – Speed healing on scrapes or wounds, prevents infection, slows bleeding

Rose of Sharon



Historical Data – Cistus is also known as “rock rose” or “rose of Sharon” and has been studied for its effects on the regeneration of cells.



Medical Properties – Antiviral, antibacterial, antihemmorrhagic, anti inflammatory, supports sympathetic nervous system, immune stimulant



Uses – Hemorrhages, arthritiss



Fragrant Influences – Calming to nerves, elevates the emotions

Sandalwood



Historical Data – Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for skin revitalization, yoga, and meditation. Listed in Dioscorides’ De Materia Medica (A.D.78) Europe’s first authoritative guide to reference work for herbal treatments for over 1,700 years. Recent research at Brigham Young University documented its ability to inhibit many types of cancerous cells.



Medical Properties – Antitumoral, antiviral, immune stimulant



Uses – Cancer, viral infections (Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster, cold sores, human papilloma virus etc.) skin conditions (acne, wrinkles, scars, etc.)



Fragrant Influence – Enhances deep sleep, may help remove negative programming from the cells. It is high in sesquiterpenes that stimulate the pineal gland and the limbic region of the brain, the center of emotions. The pineal gland is responsible for releasing melatonin, a powerful immune stimulant and antitumoral agent. Can be grounding and stabilizing.















Spikenard



Historical Data – Highly regarded in India as a most medicinal herb. It was the one of the most precious oils in ancient times, used only by priests, kings, or high initiates. References in the New Testament describe how Mary of Bethany used a salve of spikenard to anoint the feet of Jesus before the Last Supper. According to Dietrich Gumbel, Ph.D. it strengthens heart and improves circulation.



Medical Uses – Antibacterial, antifungal, anti inflammatoy, relaxant, immune stimulant



Uses – Insomnia, menstrual problems/PMS, heart arrhythmias, nervous tension



Fragrant Influence- Relaxing, soothing, and helps nourish and regenerate skin

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
