On Tuesday we will have the Full Pink Moon of April... I just wanted to share a little info with you
Full Pink Moon – April This name came from the herb moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names for this month’s celestial body include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes the Full Fish Moon, because this was the time that the shad swam upstream to spawn.
Moss pink - Phlox subulata A prostrate perennial with attractive flowers. Moss pink is commonly planted as an ornamental ground cover and only rarely escapes to become a weed in certain situations
Shad - A. sapidissima
The shads or river herrings comprise the genus Alosa, fish related to herring in the family Clupeidae. They are distinct from others in that family by having a deeper body and spawning in rivers. The several species frequent different areas on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and in the Mediterranean Sea. The shad fry live for a year or two in fresh water.
The American or Atlantic shad is a valued food fish. It was especially important in the 18th century; however, many of the rivers where it was common now suffer from pollution. Traditionally it was caught along with salmon in set nets which were suspended from poles driven into the river bed reasonably close to shore in tidal water. It weighs between 3 and 8 pounds and has a delicate flavour when cooked. It is considered flavourful enough to not require sauces, herbs or spices. It can be boiled, filleted and fried in butter or baked. Traditionally a little vinegar is sprinkled over it on the plate. In the eastern United States roe shad (females) are prized because the eggs are considered a delicacy.
All right all, I'm getting a little desperate here -- the landlord came by and said I need to get Jet out of the apartment as soon as I can. He'll be tested, fixed, and have all his shots -- he'll be ready to go! Can you find a place in your heart for a tiny black kitten?
Thank you for sharing...this was very moving. I showed my husband and even he thought it was good. Sometimes beauty comes in the most unexpected places...
