Xin nian kuai le! Happy Chinese New Year of the Wood Horse, beginning January 31!

"Because the Horse is related to fire, this is a Wood Fire Year. The first element symbolizes heaven and spirituality. The second element, fire, symbolizes the physical world, especially the environment and economy. Elements may be either in harmony or conflict. This year the elements are in harmony. Wood produces fire. This means that this year spirituality has the potential to feed and transform our physical, earthly existence.

In Chinese astrology, the horse represents nobility, travel, adventure, energy, and perseverance. It is a good year to be reminded of these things (and to honor the horse) by placing statues or images of the horse in your home.

San Sha: "Three Killing Forces" For every year, there is a direction of bad luck (San Sha)-- including disasters, accidents, and financial loss. This year the killing forces are in the North. That means it is best not to travel north, or do home renovation in the north side of your home, or disturb the ground by digging holes in the north side of your property. The latter would disturb the Lords of the Soil (Tu Di Gong and his wife, Tu Di Po), who influence prosperity and the well being of ancestral spirits. It is best not to sit in the north side of a home or office. If you have choice, do not sit with your back to the north; rather you are better protected against its influence by facing north. In general, be careful regarding any phenomena associated with the north. You can neutralize the san sha by placing 3 bamboo plants or representations of bamboo plants (paintings or statues) in the northern part of your home, and, if your door faces north, placing a bagua mirror on or above it."-EXCERPT FROM POST BY KENNETH COHEN,
