The Benandanti were members of an ancient agrarian fertility cult in northern Italy who practiced white magick.  Perceiving their role a protectors of agricultural fertility, they often fought nightly battles with witches over the fertility of the crops and livestock.  This drew the attention of Roman inquisitors in the late 16th century, who tortured them as they would for those suspected of practicing black magick.

Benandanti were people marked at birth by a 'caul', a amniotic sack partially covering their body (especially their head).  This accident of birth was thought to mark them as having healing powers and an ability to identify witches.  Sometimes cauls were saved and turned into amulets which the Benandanti wore as necklaces.

The Benandanti ("good walkers" or "good-doers") were believed to be able to speak with the spirits of the dead as well as control the powers of nature.  Reportedly, they could astral travel, shape-shift, heal and perform other shaman related activities for the benefit of the Fruili village people.  At each equinox and solstice they protected the village by fighting an evil cult called the 'Malandanti' ("bad walkers" or "evil-doers"; AKA 'Strigoni') over the harvest yield.  The fight would take place at night while they were astrally projected.  The Benandanti would arm themselves with long stalks of fennel, and the Malandanti with sorghum stalks. The outcome of this battle would determine if harvest time would be bountiful or if poor crops would lead to famine for the villagers.

The Watchers

http://www.fabrisia.com/thewinds.htm

The Watchers are referred differently in each culture.  They are guardians (Egyptian's "Neteru")and messengers (Bible's "malochim"). In Sumeria, they were called Annunaki and were the four great Gods who created man and were regarded as the four fates.  They are also seen as a high order of Angels referred to as Archangels (AKA Grigori "watchers" in Greek or Irin "those who watch" in Hebrew ). Originally the Watchers were known as four royal stars, and they marked each cardinal direction.  The Watchers are evoked to summon their presence at a ritual circle.  Their nature can also be invoked within ourselves (by addressing as in prayer).

Strega

http://www.fabrisia.com/concepts.htm

Strega is derived from the Latin word "Strix".  In modern Italian, it  means "witch" or "hag".

Treguendas ("quarterly" or "every three months")

http://www.fabrisia.com/concepts.htm

The word Treguenda is used to refer to the eight moon cycle based holidays in Italy.  There are four major (Oct, Feb, May, Aug) and four minor holidays or festivals (Spring and Fall equinoxes and Summer and Winter solstices).  While the major festivals are spiritual rites, the minor festivals are seasonally related agricultural festivals.

Etruscans

http://www.fabrisia.com/etruscan.htm

Etruscans (AKA Tyrrhenoi or Tyrsenoi by the Greek, Etrusci or Tusci by the Romans) referred to themselves as Rasna or, Rasenna, and when they dominated Rome they organized people into classes.  At the top, was the Rex, whom the Gods gave Imperium, a divine power, to rule over the people so as to protect the favor of the Gods.  Then there was the "priest-king" class who came from the aristocratic upper class.  The people in this class served as judge, monarch, military leader and priest.  Directly under them were the farmers, herders, craftsmen, vintners, servants and laborers.

Luxurious tombs filled with pillow topped funerary beds, clothes and slippers, weapons, jewelry, food and utensils housed the aristocratic dead, so that they could be as comfortable in their afterlife as they were in life.  They even reproduced the house floor plans for the deceased and their family so, together, they could rest peacefully in death as they did in life. The tomb is filled with items made of bronze, gold and iron.

Etruscans were fierce and bold, having a strong land infantry and sea-faring power.  The Greeks called them "pirates" and indeed piracy was considered a profession like any other in the Etruscan culture.

The Etruscans believed that the pleasures of life could continue in the afterlife.  To ensure this, they felt it necessary to gain the good will of the Gods while they were living.

The Etruscans feared the will of the Gods and Goddesses.  The priests role was to decipher and understand the signs the Gods had sent, which may come in the form of a change in the flights of birds (auspices), a lightning strike (a prodigy), a dream (a portend) or by the appearance of sacrificial animals organs (an omen; haruspices).  Every natural phenomenon was seen as an expression of divine will.

The Etruscan pantheon believed in a wide array of Gods and Goddesses, each one being a patron for every craft and skill imaginable and who had a specific area of influence. All the natural elements fell under their control and regulation.  In their honor, the Etruscans set up shrines at crossroads, river crossings and fresh water springs.

Seers were called to read omens for many reasons, even to determine if it was favorable to develop on a piece of land.

The spoken Etruscan language was very different from Latin and Greek, but some of the written characters share similarities with Greek letters.  Oddly, no spaces were used to separate written words and punctuation was barely used. The text was written/read right to left, unlike Greek, Latin or English.  However, it was from the Etruscans that the Romans learned the alphabet that we use today.

Lasa (referred to today as "Lare")

http://www.fabrisia.com/concepts.htm

Etruscans called nature spirits, which were once their human ancestors but have spiritually evolved, Lasa. These spirits are thought to protect the Old Religion and it's followers. Today, the streghe families gain strength and aid by staying linked with their ancestors through the Lare, which have strong ties to ancestors. They do this by setting up a shrine in their home so that they can ask for aid from their respected elder Lare.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
