Lupercalia

Lupercalia was a celebration of the god Lupercus, the Roman god of wolves and the forest. It was also a time to welcome in the coming spring. A time to celebrate fertility and the awakening earth.  The founding brothers of Rome, Remus and Romulus, were said to have been raised by a she-wolf, and so the festival began, celebrated on February 15.th

The men would traditionally dress in wolf skins and run around looking for indiscriminate sexual partners. Anyone would do. Libations overflowed to celebrate fertility and the Roman origin. Feasts of aphrodisiacs, wines, and honeyed sweets abounded. Lupercalia was one of the rarities in daily Roman life, in which slaves and aristocrats could comingle.

The Catholic Church, wanting to step away from the blatant sexual nature of this celebration, later turned it into a day to celebrate platonic love, St. Valentine’s Day. There is no archeological evidence to support that such a person, St. valentine, actually existed. Instead, he is the embodiment of romantic love. (Like the church turning Eros, the god of love and passion, into Cupid, a child with his bow and arrows of love.)

So celebrate, this day of love, pleasure, and fertility as you see fit! And may your spring be blessed with abundance and growth.

So since most of us celebrate this as a day of love from ancient Rome, what better than a a honeyed Cheesecake from Ancient Rome.  *Origionally published by Namaste Mama on:  www.allrecipes.com.* This sounded like the perfect desert. I havent tried it. But I am going to this year. It got 4.5 stars and the reveiwes were pretty good. If anyone else tries it, let me know!how it worked for you! It just sounds like sex in a cake. LOL

                                Savillum (Ancient Roman Cheesecake)

Ingredients

  • 15 bay leaves
  • 3 eggs
  • 8 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Directions

  1. Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Pour some water into a small, oven proof bowl, and place into the oven. Arrange the bay leaves over the bottom of the springform pan to cover.
  2. Beat the eggs in a mixing bowl, then mix in ricotta cheese, honey, orange zest, and lemon juice. Sprinkle in the flour, and stir until evenly combined. Gently pour the batter over the bay leaves, being careful not to disturb them too much.

Bake in the preheated oven until browned, about 35 to 40 minutes. Run the tip of a paring knife around the edges of the pan, and release from the springform pan. Invert onto a serving plate, and serve warm or chilled.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
