From Julie:
I make SCA garb and occasionally a Renn Faire costume for the larger men and women. I like to say that my sizes start where others stop. I was born in San Francisco and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area all of my life until I moved to Pennsylvania 10 years ago. Being a large teen and not being able to find anything but "old ladies clothes" I began to sew them for myself. I've continued to sew ever since. When my son joined the SCA he needed tunics for his persona and, of course, I made them for him. My first attempts weren't great, but as I studied period clothing and perfected my pattern, my tunics started getting attention. Pretty soon my son's friends wanted tunics, then others that he met asked how they could get them. Eventually, I outgrew my sewing room and opened a shop. Now I have two or three ladies sewing with me. We make large size garb and large size women's mundane clothing and lingerie. I sell garb and clothing on eBay, and I sell garb occasionally at SCA events. I am married to a wonderful man and have a son in college. I also have a step-daughter who is in the Army, stationed in Louisiana until July, 2003 when she gets discharged. She was in Afghanistan in the Summer of 2002, and when she returned she married a fellow soldier. She had her first child in July, right around her discharge date (and my birth date). They are expecting to live here in our town in Pennsylvania and we couldn't be happier.

Actually, the (then) SCA royalty elevated me to the rank of "Lord" because I had written some things they liked. War songs & fantasy poetry, mostly. And some rather hairy limericks. (Etc.!)

"Lord" corresponds roughly to Pfc in the pecking order. "Bloodaxe" got past the name-Nazis because it's a true viking lineage. A genuine King Bloodaxe actually funded a Christian church in England in the 900's.

Unfortunately, I wasn't much for boot-kissing, so I never got any higher than Pfc. But I did get there twice. So, technically, I'm "Lord Lord Morgan Bloodaxe, Order of the Poets Laureate, yada-yada, blah-blah, etc., etc."

("Don't stare, children! He's bilordial.")

I was kind of a party-Viking, I admit, but I purely loved the hands-on stuff.

This part may be of interest: *I also did a lot of SCA merchanting. I had a joint called "Jolly Sven's Bargain Pillage"--so I was "Jolly Sven" almost as often as I was "Uncle Morgan".

Several of my personalities once debated which one of me was most beloved by the rabble...

Each won.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
