Our researches have come up with some interesting facts about pants in the 18th century during the French & Indian War period. Pants were very common in Europe and North America. But the French militiaman or woodman had reoriented their personal preferences to the Indian style, the breechcloth that were worn with or without leggings were in vogue for the summer. The rest of the population, on the other half, had the same taste as their European relatives.

Two major styles were in use, first one is the French Fly that was by far the most popular style and was the one issued by the military in the F&I period. A rough estimate was that 60 to 70% of the pants were French Fly compared to 40 to 30% that were drop front. These figures will slowly change as the F&I give place to the Revolution War. At this time period, the drop front were now 60 to 70% of the general preferences compared to 40% to 30% for the old French Fly. Note that the drop fronts were generally issued for the military during the Revolution War by both sides.
Pants were made out of different kinds of material: cotton, canvas, linen, different weights and grades of wool and even some of the common material founds in the 18th century.
Note that wool pants were generally lined and if not, the person would wear underwear.

Drop Front Breeches

The english type of pants, not used very much before 1760, it took over with the downfall of the french fly pants. They became the pants of the late 18th and beginning 19th century.

Our French Fly are made out of 17 buttons: 5 on the front, one on each side of the functional pockets and 5 on each side of the legs. Most of the original have knee buckles, but for cost reason, we put a button on the fitting togue. It can be easy for you to replace it with a buckle. We always sow 1 extra button inside each of our garmet because we know that it is not : IF you will eventually lose one, but WHEN, so when you will lose one you will be happy to find it inside. ( By the way if you lose to much of them, we sell botton by the dozen).

Sailor Slops Breeches

This is a garment that I am very proud of. Some very kind person showed me a museum copy of an original (you can probably understand why we can’t say what museum because some people like to keep there precious knowledge to themselves). But, because I am a re-enactor like you and I believe in sharing knowledge and information for the safe of the hobby, I’ve decided to make my version of the slops. First of all, slops were not only for sailor or man in a port, the slops were the 18th century over all. They were the pieces of garment that you would wear if you would be doing some dirty sloppy work.

The slops were made to be worn over your regular pants and protect them.
This is why it is made longer and much baggier then the French Fly or the Drop Front. Most slop did not have pockets, they were just opening so you could access to your real pocket: just like a women shirt giving access to her pocket. On the original pair, the waistband had only one pewter button. When we initially copied that, I found out that wearing it was uncomfortable because the waist was folding itself in two at the button and caused some pressure and it was uncomfortable at the waist.

Doing this hobby, we often cheat and I am the first one to admit that I do sometimes. The slops were design to be worn over a pair of pants that gives you a waist support and comfort so even if the original slops would have folded in two, it would not have pinched my belly, because my breaches would have protected me…our ancestors were so clever.
But when I wear my slops, I wear them alone, I’ve decided to put a button at the waist level and provided them whit a functional pockets. Beside that, only there was still one difference between my pair and the museum one: the museum one had 4 hand made round buttons holes on the back for adjustment, mine is machine made and plate.

P.S.: I am giving you guys a warning, if you buy these slops, it will change your persona because they are so comfortable you would not want to put anything else on again, so think twice before you buy one! At least, I made a warning.
