These days most of my family is Christian, but our history is English and Irish and our lineage is long.  We are a family of matriarchs and have been since my own grandmother can remember.  I knew my great grandmother and many of my great aunts well. This September, I am having a daughter, who I will name Liberty, and will have the chance to pass on the knowledge of women that has been passed to me.

I have only recently begun to truly study the history of this family of women, but for years I thought it strange that I found so many obvious witches in a family that is honestly Christian (well, except me)  It turns out that long ago, in a time before we can remember, we converted for whatever reason, but like many other olde families, kept some of the ancient spirit alive through story, song, and household practices.

A rowan tree grows on my Aunt Joy's property-although Rowan's aren't supposed to be able to grow here, and she picked her property in part for it's abundance of oak and mistletoe.  We are farmers still living life by the seasons.  It's late summer so we're canning and pickling now, and soon it will be time to make the breads of Autumn.  We eat from our garden, and we sing Irish folk songs to our children as lullabies (I went to sleep as a child with such ballads as Finnegan's Wake and The Bridge of Tombs--hmm.)

In many ways, the ancient magick itself has been forgotten, but much of the practice still remains, left only to it's practical purposes, the spiritual ends left instead to Church and Bible Study and choir practice.  When I began to study Wicca and Druidism in my early 20's, I was surprised by what I already knew, having learned it from my own mother-who would be truly appalled at the content of this post.

But in at least one way the magick remained, untouched by modern sensibility, the Age of Reason, and Christianity's cold denial of faiths outside itself.  In the realm of Fae, we are still old here, and we are still Irish.  The doctor's say my mother is forgetful and have prescribed medication, but we say that the faeries just like hiding her glasses.  The world says it's luck that my grandmother found $20 in an old shoe, but we know it was a gift from the wee ones, for my grandmother is full of grace and generosity.
Faeries like cleanliness and hard work ,but they detest a sterile environment and abhor an obsession with "business or busyness."  We know this, because they hide my mother's glasses in response to her untidy ways, but have blessed our garden with uncommon productivity this year because of our extra love and attention (and my daily watering.)

These things are taken to be self evident-never mind and never speak of the psychological, scientific, cause and effect "truths" that are the temporal foundations of reality.  That's only one way to tell the story.  We don't deny it's accuracy, we just don't tell it that way.

Those among us who understand and love the fae, who "see" them dancing to the waterfall songs of the Poplar trees, understand too that the world they represent is as real as any that can be measured and proven.  We understand too that their magick is no more mysterious in it's own way than gravity, and that poor ol' Murphy (of Murphy's Law) simply irritated a few too many of them, and was tortured for it in that special faerie way.

The faeries have not let us forget who we are and where we come from.  Their tiny hands clasp still to bridge a gap from this world of the material and patriarchal to the ancient world of mists and moons.  In this family, as long as we continue to understand and celebrate their light and life, I believe they will continue to guide and protect us.

How do you understand and use the wisdom and magick of the Fae?

Shall we clap?
Namaste,
Himitsuko

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
