Alchem serves as a reseller of finished prods and strings, and a machining service providing rough unfinished parts to crossbow manufacturers. We do not manufacture archery equipment, finished crossbows, or kits. Links to recommended manufacturers of these items may be found at the bottom of this page. The following is a list of materials and parts we currently supply. Many items are in stock and ready for immediate delivery. Others are produced in response to orders. Additionally we can supply some custom parts in large or small quantities. For a quote, submit a drawing and specifications. Please allow up to 6 weeks for delivery of custom orders.
Our crossbow prods now come with a six inch length of heat shrink tubing serving as a safety strap "sichern". These extend form the center of the prod outward, three inches on both sides. Safety straps are intended to reduce the chance of the shooter or a bystander being injured by a broken limb. Breakage, if it occurs, is nearly always confined to the area of maximum stress, from the center of the prod, to an inch or so beyond the point where the prod presses against the stock. This tubing should not be removed, since to do so creates a danger of injury to the user. If necessary, the safety strap may be covered with leather or some similar flexible material.

Draw Weight
We currently manufacture a number of different crossbow prod models to provide our customers with a wide range of draw weights. We have determined that average draw weights will vary slightly from production batch to production batch due to differences in the thickness of the metal, the chemistry of the steel and its resulting hardness. Furthermore, draw weights will vary even within a given batch due to minor differences in the shape (tillering) of the parts. In the past these variations caused our customers a great deal of consternation. One of our customers, by the name of Gene Dwiggins of Rhode Island, built us a testing bench capable of rapidly and accurately determining the draw weight of a prod up to 300 pounds. Therefore we now test every prod we produce and record on its center belly the draw weight determined at 11.5 inches. This information makes it possible for a customer to order the exact draw weight desired. It also makes it possible to estimate the approximate draw weight and energy storage of a given prod when drawn to a distance shorter than the maximum recommended 11.5 inches. For this reason we have devised the following table.
The following draw weight, draw length, and energy table has been compiled to include all of our prod models with a maximum recommended overall draw distance of 11.5 inches. In estimating draw weights and energies we assumed a brace height of 3.5 inches giving an actual maximum draw distance of 8 inches. Data was calculated down to 6 inches of actual draw since shorter draw lengths are not likely to be required by our customers. The following measurements are estimates.
Distances are expressed in inches. Weights are in pounds. It should be noted that the "pound inch" figures following Weight x Draw are not equivalent to energy expressed in inch-pounds.
The actual energy E required to draw a bow W a given distance D may be calculated as follows:
E = .5 x W x D.
W is the draw weight of the bow at distance D.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.
Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.
Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.
As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.
We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.
Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.
Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.
Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"
A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?
After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...
Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
