"But the great spirit has provided you and me with an opportunity for study in nature's university, the forests, the rivers, the mountains, and the animals which include us."
-- -- Walking Buffalo, STONEY
What we really need to learn is how to live life. Nature is the greatest university when we want to learn about balance, harmony, the Natural Laws and how to live life. But we will never learn unless we spend time in the "living university." Nature is full of examples, lessons, and exercises about life. Nature will help humans learn. Nature will help humans heal. Nature will help with Medicine, knowledge, and healing. The reason our Elders are so wise is because they have attended the right educational system - nature's university.

Great Spirit, help me to become wise.

May 13, 1607: Jamestown founded

Some 100 English colonists arrive along the west bank of the James River in Virginia to found Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. Dispatched from England by the London Company, the colonists had sailed across the Atlantic aboard the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery.

Upon landing at Jamestown, the first colonial council was held by seven settlers whose names had been chosen and placed in a sealed box by King James I. The council, which included Captain John Smith, an English adventurer, chose Edward Wingfield as its first president. After only two weeks, Jamestown came under attack from warriors from the local Algonquian Native American confederacy, but the Indians were repulsed by the armed settlers. In December of the same year, John Smith and two other colonists were captured by Algonquians while searching for provisions in the Virginia wilderness. His companions were killed, but he was spared, according to a later account by Smith, because of the intercession of Pocahontas, Chief Powhatan's daughter.

During the next two years, disease, starvation, and more Native American attacks wiped out most of the colony, but the London Company continually sent more settlers and supplies. The severe winter of 1609 to 1610, which the colonists referred to as the "starving time," killed most of the Jamestown colonists, leading the survivors to plan a return to England in the spring. However, on June 10, Thomas West De La Warr, the newly appointed governor of Virginia, arrived with supplies and convinced the settlers to remain at Jamestown. In 1612, John Rolfe cultivated the first tobacco at Jamestown, introducing a successful source of livelihood. On April 5, 1614, Rolfe married Pocahontas, thus assuring a temporary peace with Chief Powhatan.

The death of Powhatan in 1618 brought about a resumption of conflict with the Algonquians, including an attack led by Chief Opechancanough in 1622 that nearly wiped out the settlement. The English engaged in violent reprisals against the Algonquians, but there was no further large-scale fighting until 1644, when Opechancanough led his last uprising and was captured and executed at Jamestown. In 1646, the Algonquian Confederacy agreed to give up much of its territory to the rapidly expanding colony, and, beginning in 1665, its chiefs were appointed by the governor of Virginia.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Your day is full of ups and downs, seemingly beyond your control. This should motivate you to consider why you have so little control and to find ways you can become more in charge of your destiny.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Your attention shifts to success on the job. It's a good day for high-profile work. Your efforts can bring you to the attention of important people. You need to stand out, not blend in.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): While you do well within the job limits you're in, you still feel you're not doing all you could. This should motivate you to make self-improvements, particularly in education, so you are more hirable.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Your ideals face the test of public action. It's important that you stay true to your beliefs and to be sure that anyone representing or associated with you does likewise. A bad apple can generate bad press.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Today, you need to be concerned with people's motives, not just with what they do. You can make suggestions to those who are well-meaning but you need to be alert to those whose motives are base or evil.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You get together with people who share the same ideals as you. This is a good day to get everyone in contact and in communication. Common action is less important than being of common heart and soul.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You may feel low on energy unless you and until you get attention from people. Once you know you have approval, you become motivated. Knowing you will be noticed is very energizing.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You put a lot of importance on relationships but you're sensitive to whether you have immediate success or failure. Don't be discouraged. Without making a pest of yourself, be persistent and kind regardless of what happens.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You can think too much and read too much into small matters. Let little nuisances pass you by; focus on what really matters. You will be happier in the long run when you pay attention to the ultimate goal.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): It's important to put your imaginative and motivational ideas out to the public. Your ideals are catching; you just need to let people know there's someone to meet up with. A crowd encourages joiners.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You feel attached to your family today. Anything that takes your attention or your presence away from them feels like a burden. Many are challenged to work family life in to their work schedule.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Your spiritual ideals are very strong today. The way you feel seems very close to why you were born to be here. Follow your intuition. Logic cannot tell you what motive or what goal is involved.

"All the stones that are around here, each one has a language of its own. Even the earth has a song."
-- -- Wallace Black Elk, LAKOTA
To believe that every tree, plant, and insect can talk takes an open mind. Go by yourself into nature and sit quietly. Then pick up a rock and listen to your thoughts. After a while, put that rock down and pick up another rock. Your thoughts will change. These are the voices and wisdom of the Stone People. Each one has different wisdom and they are willing to share their wisdom with you. Many of the Stone People are very old and very wise.

Great Spirit, let every rock and leaf be my teacher

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Anticipation builds today. You're waiting for something important to happen any moment. You discuss options with friends and many plans can be discussed, depending on what happens next.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): This is a good day to pay close attention to what is a routine with you. It may not be necessary to make any changes now but self-examination and reflection while you are acting can give you great insights.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You feel anxious for love or attention. You may try emotional manipulation to bring it to the level you desire. You may need to understand that others do indeed have very pressing issues to attend to and it's no reflection on you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Pay close attention to your investment portfolio. It's time to contemplate, or to actually make, a revision. Some may have a change forced on them. Your needs, or a company's policies, have altered.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You feel the need for reliable information and you want it fast. You have little time for frivolous banter or social politeness. You want to get at the core facts so you can develop it quickly.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): There is a possibility of success when you don't remain formal. Open up a bit to people with whom you have a professional relationship. It's important, however, not to trespass social norms too much.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You are liable to be pulled into a personal drama today. There is a lot of excitement but the highly charged circumstance might yield little understanding unless all parties step back and operate by civil rules.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You can recognize what has held you back from success. You can reorganize your thoughts and intentions to be more aligned with your desires. You need to make, and stick with, a reasonable plan.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Pay attention to your creative ideas now. This is a good day for beginning or continuing a side project that requires thought and ingenuity. Mechanical, electrical or computer projects can be favored.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Your attention turns toward making money. Some may have entrepreneurial aspirations. You can carve out a unique niche that can give you a small but definite business edge.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You are an avid conversationalist today. You may need to make yourself listen at least as much as you talk. Your thinking processes are quick but your logic can be clouded by your mood of the moment or by persistent biases.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You pay a lot more attention to the people around you at home and your neighborhood. You turn away from job and politics and seek to build up personal relationships that form the basis of everything else.

"[The Old People] would gather words as they walked a sacred path across the Earth, leaving nothinig behind but prayers and offerings."
-- -- Cleone Thunder, NORTHERN ARAPAHOE
Whenever we walk on the Earth, we should pay attention to what is going on. Too often our minds are somewhere else, thinking about the past or thinking about the future. When we do this, we are missing important lessons. The Earth is a constant flow of lessons and learnings which also include a constant flow of positive feelings. If we are aware as we walk, we will gather words for our lives, the lessons to help our children; we will gather feelings of interconnectedness and calmness. When we experience this, we should say or think thoughts of gratitude. When we do this, the next person to walk on the sacred path will benefit even more.

My Creator, today, let me be aware of the sacred path

ARIES (March 21-April 19): It's important that you adhere to sound business practices today. There is an emphasis on problems today but approached with a can-do attitude you can turn fortunes upward.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You become aware of the need to diversify your knowledge. Take time to learn more about issues that pertain to your main subject. You need to integrate information from different fields of study.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Look at creative ways of investing your money. A sound and conservative change is necessary. It may be that some of your investments have been too risky. Get them back into something reliable over the long term.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): It's important that you have several different people to rely on. For various reasons, no one person can be depended on, so you should have a selection available to different needs at different times.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): This is a good day to show that you are an efficient worker and a good leader. You're interested in success. Don't be discouraged easily as this will show up in inconsistent effort.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You're feeling energetic and ambitious today. You want to achieve high marks or recognition. Some may be looking for a plum assignment or a highly desired promotion. The prospects are good.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You pay more attention to your family today. There can be a need for more control, discipline or teaching. You may become aware that something essential has been neglected and this a good day to make up for it.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You are engaged in a vigorous exchange of ideas today. Expect many agreements and disagreements. The important thing is that you learn from your encounters and get closer to the truth.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You have unrealistic expectations about how business works. You're set up to feel righteous while having no prospect of winning. Look for ways you can be both successful and moral.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You vacillate between moments of energetic effort followed by complacent coasting. You need to become more consistent and attentive. Those who are paying attention to health issues need to follow a regular schedule.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You have trouble applying yourself consistently. You may think that you're done with a task before it really is. You tend to daydream. Focus on the real world with more attention.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You can be alarmed at the news today. Conspiracy theories can be born and run wild. In many cases, a closer attention to facts will show the real story. Imagination gets out of control too easily now.

"When you go inside that power, there's no fear. It's so beautiful!! There's no fear there. There's no pain."
-- -- Wallace Black Elk, LAKOTA
Imagine you are standing on the edge of a stage. In the center of the stage is a spotlight shining from above. If you stand anyplace outside the spotlight, in the darkness, you will experience fear. But as soon as you step into the light in the center of the stage, all fear and pain go away. When we stand in the power, fear cannot exist. How do we find this place of power? We pray our way into it. We ask the Creator to take our hand and help us. When we get to that place, we will feel the fear go away.

Great Spirit, hold my hand and guide me today

"Without a sacred center, no one knows right from wrong."
-- -- Thomas Yellowtail, CROW
In the center of the circle is where the powers reside. These powers are called love, principle, justice, spirtual knowledge, life, forgiveness and truth. All these powers reside in the very center of the human being. We access these powers by being still, quieting the mind. If we get confused, emotionally upset, feel resentment, anger, or fear, the best thing we can do is pray to the Great Spirit and ask Him to remove the anger and resentment. By asking Him to remove these obstacles, we are automatically positioned in the sacred center. Only in this way do we know right from wrong.

Great Spirit, allow me this day to live in the sacred center

May 9, 1671:
Captain Blood steals crown jewels

In London, Thomas Blood, an Irish adventurer better known as "Captain Blood," is captured attempting to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London.

Blood, a Parliamentarian during the English Civil War, was deprived of his estate in Ireland with the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660. In 1663, he put himself at the head of a plot to seize Dublin Castle from supporters of King Charles II, but the plot was discovered and his accomplices executed. He escaped capture. In 1671, he hatched a bizarre plan to steal the new Crown Jewels, which had been refashioned by Charles II because most of the original jewels were melted down after Charles I's execution in 1649.

On May 9, 1671, Blood, disguised as a priest, managed to convince the Jewel House keeper to hand over his pistols. Blood's three accomplices then emerged from the shadows, and together they forced their way into the Jewel House. However, they were caught in the act when the keeper's son showed up unexpectedly, and an alarm went out to the Tower guard. One man shoved the Royal Orb down his breeches while Blood flattened the Crown with a mallet and tried to run off with it. The Tower guards apprehended and arrested all four of the perpetrators, and Blood was brought before the king. Charles was so impressed with Blood's audacity that, far from punishing him, he restored his estates in Ireland and made him a member of his court with an annual pension.

Captain Blood became a colorful celebrity all across the kingdom, and when he died in 1680 his body had to be exhumed in order to persuade the public that he was actually dead.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
