Jul 19, 1553:
Lady Jane Grey deposed

After only nine days as the monarch of England, Lady Jane Grey is deposed in favor of her cousin Mary. The 15-year-old Lady Jane, beautiful and intelligent, had only reluctantly agreed to be put on the throne. The decision would result in her execution.

Lady Jane Grey was the great-granddaughter of King Henry VII and the cousin of King Edward VI. Lady Jane and Edward were the same age, and they had almost been married in 1549. In May 1553 she was married to Lord Guildford Dudley, the son of John Dudley, the duke of Northumberland. When King Edward fell deathly ill with tuberculosis soon after, Jane's father-in-law, John Dudley persuaded the dying king that Jane, a Protestant, should be chosen the royal successor over Edward's half-sister Mary, a Catholic. On July 6, 1553, Edward died, and four days later Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen of England.

Lady Jane's ascendance was supported by the Royal Council, but the populace supported Mary, the rightful heir. Two days into Lady Jane's reign, Dudley departed London with an army to suppress Mary's forces, and in his absence the Council declared him a traitor and Mary the queen, ending Jane's nine-day reign.

By July 20, most of Dudley's army had deserted him, and he was arrested. The same day, Jane was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Her father-in-law was condemned for high treason, and on August 23 he was executed. On November 13, Jane and her husband, Guildford Dudley, were likewise found guilty of treason and sentenced to death, but because of their youth and relative innocence Mary did not carry out the death sentences.

However, in early 1554, Jane's father, Henry Grey, joined Sir Thomas Wyatt in an insurrection against Mary that broke out after her announcement of her intention to marry Philip II of Spain. While suppressing the revolt, Mary decided it was also necessary to eliminate all her political opponents, and on February 7 she signed the death warrants of Jane and her husband. On the morning of February 12, Jane watched her husband being carried away to execution from the window of her cell in the Tower of London, and two hours later she was also executed. As British tradition tells the story, after the 16-year-old girl was beheaded, her executioner held Jane's head aloft and recited the words: "So perish all the queen's enemies! Behold, the head of a traitor!"

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Be extremely careful today. Rash decisions go wrong, uncoordinated actions cause disruption. Your sense that time is short can cause you to make serious blunders. Make quick decisions without feeling panicked.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You're prone to live in fantasy today. It's hard to get out of your imagination and focus your senses on the physical world. You generally have a hard time dealing with problems but can be very creative otherwise.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Sudden, abrupt changes are likely now in your association with organizations and with friends. You may feel that procedures are too confining and time-consuming. You can't wait for permission; you want to do it now!

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You are easily discouraged today. Fight against this feeling of gloom today. The situation isn't as bleak as it appears or as you make it out to be. You may need to act, though without enthusiasm, before you see results.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Challenging ideas create disorientation today. Comfortable beliefs are challenged, maybe even uprooted beyond deniability. For some, extreme care should be taken when traveling both in your familiar neighborhood and afar.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You cede a lot of power and decision-making to a partner today. You have trouble making up your mind so you must try extra hard to apply logic and to become more aware of what you really want out of a situation.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You are easily angered, and can make incorrect presumptions about people. Agitation and anger are signs you're thinking incorrectly. There is also high risk of accidents; keep safety first around machines, especially cars.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your imagination is at a high point today but it can also be matched by an incredible lack of good judgment. You may need a partner with common sense to steer you through practical decision-making.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You're prone to disregard expectations; you can see this as a trap to escape. You need to consider your responsibilities, and weigh them against your freedoms; you emphasize the latter at the expense of the former.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You have trouble today. Events move slowly or perhaps it's you moving slowly. You can be too shy or afraid to take a chance, when doing so could give you what you want. Don't fear, or regret, failure.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Unexpected news can throw you into confusion. It's important to wait until you have all the information. The situation is fast-moving and you can expect that the initial news is very wrong.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You feel you have a lot of wisdom to dispense but something is missing the mark, You may not be perceiving the situation right or your advice is amiss or too impractical. Wait patiently for your insight to come to consciousness

"Our fathers gave us many laws which they had learned from their fathers. These laws were good."
-- Chief Joseph, NEZ PERCE
The Creator gives us many laws to live by. These are different than the laws of man. The laws of the Creator are designed for us to live in harmony and balance with ourselves and each other. These laws are about having freedom and happiness. Our Elders teach us these laws. Laws about how to treat each other, laws about how to treat and respect our Mother Earth, laws about the environment.

Oh Great Spirit, teach me the laws of the unseen world. Today I pray You open my eyes so I can better see the Red Road

Jul 18, 64:
Nero's Rome burns

The great fire of Rome breaks out and destroys much of the city on this day in the year 64. Despite the well-known stories, there is no evidence that the Roman emperor, Nero, either started the fire or played the fiddle while it burned. Still, he did use the disaster to further his political agenda.

The fire began in the slums of a district south of the legendary Palatine Hill. The area's homes burned very quickly and the fire spread north, fueled by high winds. During the chaos of the fire, there were reports of heavy looting. The fire ended up raging out of control for nearly three days. Three of Rome's 14 districts were completely wiped out; only four were untouched by the tremendous conflagration. Hundreds of people died in the fire and many thousands were left homeless.

Although popular legend holds that Emperor Nero fiddled while the city burned, this account is wrong on several accounts. First, the fiddle did not even exist at the time. Instead, Nero was well known for his talent on the lyre; he often composed his own music. More importantly, Nero was actually 35 miles away in Antium when the fire broke out. In fact, he let his palace be used as a shelter.

Legend has long blamed Nero for a couple of reasons. Nero did not like the aesthetics of the city and used the devastation of the fire in order to change much of it and institute new building codes throughout the city. Nero also used the fire to clamp down on the growing influence of Christians in Rome. He arrested, tortured and executed hundreds of Christians on the pretext that they had something to do with the fire.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You're feeling inner turmoil today. Your appearance of moodiness is a clear reflection of what's happening inside you. It's easy to feel confined, thwarted, unable to express yourself, with resulting volatility.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You like to appear nonchalant but you are very observant. You're assessing everything and everybody. You tend, however, to process information through a jaundiced internal filter. You need to be less judgmental.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You feel empowered today. You make a mighty effort to achieve your desires, to force the changes you sense are mandatory. You're not playing games now and the biggest danger is that you can go too far or try methods that work against you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You get into highly competitive situations now, in which you seem to get the worst of it. You try many strategies to get on people's good side but others give up trying to please someone else and awaken to their own will and desires.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Intellectually, you trust your gut instincts about what's true. This seems like a contradiction but you probably have enough experience to sense what works and what doesn't. Yours is a practical knowledge.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You feel the need to spend a lot of time with friends. You don't want to feel alone so it's important to reach out to others. For some, the chance of a romance is a strong motivator.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Before engaging in antagonistic activities, it's important to know that you have the winning strategy. Knowledge is power and you have to know what you're truly up against, in both defense and in come-back.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You're apt to encounter bureaucratic red tape and, of course, you can't wait for that. When unavoidable, cultivate patience. However, it doesn't hurt to cut corners, pull strings, call on favors, if you can.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Issues over your rights and freedom are particularly acute today. Events cause you to draw a sharp distinction between how things have become and how they should be. Your patience is strained to the limit.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Anger isn't far beneath the surface today and it could erupt at any moment. An antagonistic attitude isolates you now. It may be that people end up avoiding you or you feel like an outsider isolating yourself.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Your attention is on political developments, whether nationally or locally. There is a lot of convincing, activism or competition going on. The day is full of efforts to win people over to one side or another.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You are prone to be too demanding today. Your standards are too high or your patience is too short. Stay patient with people and work with them to get the results you know are required.

"My friends, how desperately do we need to be loved and to love."
-- Chief Dan George, SKOKOMISH
Oh my great Creator: Help me this day to love myself. I can't give away anything that I don't have myself. If I am to love others, then I must love myself. If I am to forgive others, then I am to forgive myself. If I am to accept others as they are, then I need to accept myself as I am. If I am to not judge others, then I need to lighten up on myself. Let me experience this power of love...

My Creator, today I will love myself so I can love my neighbor. I will look at each person today and see Your light within them. If I do this, I will hold my brothers and sisters without guilt

"Grandfather says...you must not hurt anybody or do harm to anyone. You must not fight. Do right always. It will give you satisfaction in life."
-- Wovoka, PAIUTE
The question one should ask themselves is: Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy? If you want to be right, this is a request from your ego. If you want to be happy then this is of the Great Spirit. The only meaning anything has is the meaning we give it. Maybe we should develop a philosophy of: Today is the last day of the rest of my life. If this were true, how easy it would be to let things go - how easy it would be to forgive.

Oh Great Spirit, let me live today as if it was my last. Let me express Your joy and be happy today. Let me see the joy and honor of living on the Red Road

"We are nothing compared to His power, and we feel and know it."
-- Black Hawk, SAUK
Inside of every man and woman is a place of knowing. In this place is the knowing that there is a Great One, the Great Mystery, the Holy One, the Great Spirit. We can deny this all we want but we know what we know. This place of knowing is at the very center of our being. It is gratifying to know that God cannot leave us. It is said we are spiritual beings trying to be human. With this power in our lives, we can accomplish much. We can do many good things for our people.

Oh Great Spirit, I know of Your power. I love the days when I can feel Your presence. Let today be one of those days. Let me walk today in Your beauty

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You take decisive, if abrupt, action regarding your job. Some try to force reforms where they work, others are willing to suddenly change into another field.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You make a radical shift in your beliefs now. For some, there has been a buildup of contradictions and these people see the way to resolve it. Others may not be that far but the cognitive dissonance builds noticeably now.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Some can see that a drastic change in financial arrangements is necessary. You make adjustments in your investments, alter wills or change insurance provisions. You should see there is no time for half measures.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You take challenges head-on today. You want to force issues and create deep change. Some are active for social reform now. Others may experiment with changing their lives into a more authentic manner.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): This is a great day for exploring alternatives to your current line of work. An actual change may not be necessary but definitely seek to be in tune with the kind of work that makes you feel spiritually fulfilled.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You are at a crossroads when it comes to professional success. You should follow the urge to make a change and not talk yourself out of taking risks. If necessary, take small experimental steps that don't break the status quo too much.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You're liable to go head-to-head with authority figures today. It's very important that you stay in control of yourself and not escalate a situation. You want real change, not a confrontation.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Difficulties with religious, legal or professional systems comes from not understanding their underlying philosophies. You need to know how to deal with them effectively, without necessarily believing in them.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Your integrity is challenged today. You must be very clear about your personal and professional values. You must stay devoted to the truth and to peace for those hold greater power than any physical force.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You place emphasis on inner work and inner change. Outwardly, you can seem compliant, but you are going with the flow and cooperating with the Universe. You have a clear idea of the outcome you're expecting.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You are attracted to situations others don't want to deal with. You like the challenge, especially since it has personal ramifications that help to define and strengthen your character.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You want to be successful and also be able to impress people. It's very important that you be the best at whatever you do professionally. Let people know that difficult situations can be overcome honestly.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
