Medicinal Uses of Asafoetida

Asafoetida or assa fetida (Ferula assa-foetida L.), also known as manure or dung of the devil the devil, is a species of the family Apiaceae, native to Persia (Iran) and characterized by a sharp odor and unpleasant.It is a herbal plant.

Once cooked prepared to give an aroma similar to garlic.

Asafoetida powder, made from the resin of the plant's root, is widely used in Indian cooking.

History

Using dell'assafetida had spread throughout the Mediterranean area since Roman times, after the Middle Ages the use dell'assafetida vanished from European cuisine.

Medicinal Use

Asafoetida is a good example of overlapping culinary and medicinal use of a plant. particularly in South India, the assafedida is regularly used for the preparation of legumes (beans, peas, lentils). These, being rich in indigestible oligosaccharides, requiring spices that have antiflatulent action. The odor of asafoetida is stronger and more tenacious than that of onion, the taste is bitter and sour, the smell of resin and rubber depends on volatile oil. It 'widely used in India and Persia as a condiment in spite of its repulsive odor, even for its stimulating effect on the brain. It is an exciting local mucous membrane, particularly of the digestive and respiratory tract and hence is a remedy of great value as a carminative in flatulence and colic is particularly used in addition to the remedies laxatives. There is evidence that the essential oil is eliminated through the lungs, and is excellent for asthmatic bronchitis, whooping cough, etc..
