We now leave the mild climate of the ancient Aegean, and the cold, forbidding regions of the North.

Here, we enter the lush, green land, shrouded in mists of magic and wonders. The land is young yet ancient; beautiful yet intriguing; and something quite magical.

We meet people who are fair and noble. Yet when aroused into battle, these people can easily become savage. One can lose their head, quite literally, at the end of the swords.

Though Celtic myths were not written until eleventh century AD, after the Vikings were driven out of Ireland, their sources, mostly oral traditions, were quite old. Even ancient.

Many of the myths that come to us, come mainly from Ireland and Wales. Celtic myths also included those from Scotland, Cornwall and Brittany (in France). We have to thank the Welsh myths, and to a lesser degree to the Irish, for the legends of King Arthur. While the medieval romance of Tristan and Isolde originated in Brittany, it gained popularity in Continental Europe and the British Isles.

Though Celtic literature didn't appear until the Middle Age, Celtic people and their religions existed during the time of ancient Rome. For more information on the Celtic people and their history and myths, feel free to readwithn here of them.

It is generally believed that there were seven separate, but historically related Celtic nations, all of which were connected to one another by common culture. Many of these nations are the resulting settlements of the Celtic tribes from early Proto-Indo-European history, Black Sea Circa. Celtic tribes have been known to venture out on vast nomadic migrations covering almost all of both eastern and western Europe. Seemingly always in pursuit of a better settlement and attempting to move away from tribal rivalry, war, famine, disease, etc. There are 14 major Celtic tribes, which have been given reference to by various Roman writers. Listedbelow are the seven most agreed upon Celtic Nations and the fourteen most predominant tribes. The 7 Celtic Nations Alba, which is now Scotland Breizh, which is now Brittany Cymru, which is now Wales Eire, which is Ireland in Old Irish Gaelic Galatia, which is now Spain, and France Kernow, which is Cornwall Mannin, is the Isle of Man The 14 most predominant Celtic tribes of note are: Aedui, Averni, Boii, Brigantes, Durotriges, Eravisci, Helvetii, Iceni, Nervii, Parisii, Scordisci, Trinovantes, Venetii, and Volcae.

RUMAN (Ruan) is a holy figure of Cornish oral tradition said to be a werewolf who is invulnerable to wolves. Though no reliable documents of his life survive, he is also said to have been a 6th-century, saint whose name survives in numerous place-names such as Romansleigh and Ruan Lanihorne, in Devonshire and Cornwall. Ruan is the Cornish version of his name. Although he was earlier identified with St Rónán of Brittany, 20th-century hagiography has argued for Ruman's discrete identity. Although not on the official calendar of saints, Ruman has been venerated on 30 August. He is said to be invulnerable to wolves and also having driven them out of his region but because of the etymology of his name, he has been nicknamed ''the hairy''. So in oral traditions some have even said that he, himself was a werewolf.

The exalted HIGHNESS of sovereignty over the land was envisioned as a beautiful woman on a crystal throne. After Conn sets out from Tara, he finds himself in an otherworldly chamber with a ridge-pole of white gold. Seated upon a throne is Lug Lámfhota, who embodies sacral kingship, while nearby on a crystal chair is a beautiful girl, his consort. She is unnamed but identified by commentators with the goddess Ériu. She asks who should serve the derg-fhlaith [red ale] making a pun on laith [Latis, ale] and flaith [vlatis, sovereignty]. Lug answers by naming all Conn's successors in the kingship. Here the sexual contact is only symbolic as Conn is offered the drink in a golden cup, whose implications are clear from other contexts. BLEIDDWN the dark wolf of Welsh mythology was the son of the brothers Gilfaethwy and Gwydion when they mated with each other as a wolf and a bitch. The wizard-king Math took Bleiddwn from the brothers, transformed him into a man and baptised him "in the way they did then."

BRÚ NA BOÍNN [the brink of the Boyne] is a passage tomb on the banks of the River Boyne. Archaeologists classified Newgrange as a passage tomb, however Newgrange is now recognised to be much more than a passage tomb. Ancient Temple is a more fitting classification, a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance, much as present day cathedrals are places of prestige and worship where dignitaries may be laid to rest. The usual English designation is “Newgrange”. It was in use by 3100 BC. Some historians now see it as the centre from which the megalithic cult spread across Ivern-Albio.

FATHACH was the poet of the Fir Bolg in the court of King Eochaid Mac Eirc at the time of the first battle of Moytura. He erected a pillar known as 'Fathach's Pillar' on which to stand and watch the proceedings of the battle and take account of all that transpired. He made a lamentation as he saw that the Fir Bolg were suffering such heavy losses. Art by Jim Fitzpatrick (1977).

And the black man was there, sitting upon the top of the mound, huge of stature. And he took his club in his hand, and with it he struck a stag a great blow so that he brayed vehemently, and at his braying the animals came together, as numerous as the stars in the sky, so that it was difficult to find room in the glade to stand among them. There were serpents, and dragons, and divers sorts of animals. And he looked at them, and bade them go and feed; and they bowed their heads, and did him homage as vassals to their lord. Then the black man said, 'Seest thou now, little man, what power I hold over these animals?'’

The VINČA SYMBOLS are an Old European script on Neolithic era artifacts from the Vinča culture of southeastern Europe in the 6th to 5th millennia BCE. The symbols are mostly considered as constituting an instance of "proto-writing"; that is, they probably conveyed a message but did not encode language, predating the development of writing proper by more than a millennium. Some have also been found in 1993 on the Dispilio Tablet (also known as the Dispilio Scripture or the Dispilio Disk), a wooden tablet bearing inscribed markings (charagmata), unearthed during George Hourmouziadis's excavations of Dispilio in Greece and carbon 14-dated to about 7300 BP (5260 BC). It was discovered in 1993 in a Neolithic lakeshore settlement that occupied an artificial island near the modern village of Dispilio on Lake Kastoria in Kastoria Prefecture, Greece. I find them reminiscent of runes. Could they in some way have been a forerunner?

King James is the ancestor of the Hanovers and the Windsors. He was King of the American Colonies and Jamaica was named after him. He welcomed Pocahontas to his court.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
