January 29th begins the runic month of Elhaz, the second to last rune of the second Aett of the Elder Futhark. It is most recognizable in the “peace” sign, though it is turned upside down. Elhaz in its true form is turned up so that the outstretched “arms” point outward and upward. Representative of the Elk, the Lord of the Forest, Elhaz symbolizes the growth of an individual as he/she winds his/her way through the tree of life (Eiwaz) and takes the series of paths set forth (Perthro). This culmination of life-binding experiences forms an individual that should bear a proud chest and impressive headdress as the elder Elk does. This is the strength of character necessary to cyclically relive each year as a stronger and willful individual. Within this, though, is a warning to not allow ones pride to be overcome by arrogance. The elk can only run through so much thicket until its own headdress prevents its progress.

In rune readings, Elhaz represents health, longevity and right-minded progression of personal character. However, when drawn upside down, it represents the existence of sickness, struggle or a flaw within ones character that is allowing bad paths to be chosen. Historically, among Germanic writings and many northern European headstones, the Elhaz rune is used to represent life and death, usually represented by the dates like our current headstone model uses the terms “born” and “died”.
