Event Description

May Day celebrations go back hundreds of years in agricultural societies. Beltane, celebrated on May 1, is one of the fire festivals, and is a day of flowers, fertility, dancing, bonfires and general merrymaking. Learn about the history of Beltane, as well as some fun crafts, fire-focused rituals, and other celebrations of the season.

As spring arrives, the birds begin nesting and returning to our lives.

Fertility of the soil is one of the main focuses at Beltane, and cultures have performed fertility rites for thousands of year each spring.

Beltane celebrates the fertility of spring and the greening of the earth. When is Beltane 2009?

May 1 is known as May Day to many people, but for a lot of Practitioners it's Beltane. It's a day to celebrate fertility, fire, and abundance.

Beltane has been celebrated for centuries among agricultural societies -- it's the beginning of May, the sign that summer is just around the corner. This fire festival has its roots in fertility rituals that can be traced back to Greco-Roman religions.

Okay, so we know that Beltane is a fertility festival……..

The tradition of the Maypole Dance has been around for a long time -- it's a celebration of the fertility of the season.

Beltane is a time of fire and fertility. Combine the passion of a roaring bonfire with the love of the May Queen and the God of the Forest.

Some parents may not be comfortable with the phallic fertility images so often found at Beltane.

When spring arrives, we can see the fertility of the earth in full bloom. For many traditions, this brings the opportunity to celebrate the sacred feminine energy of the universe

Long before the medieval peasantry of the British Isles erected their Maypoles, the ancient Romans were partying hard in honor of Flora, their spring fertility goddess. She had her very own festival, called Floralia, and there was all kinds of merrymaking going on!

In rural English villages, Morris dancing and Mummer's plays are popular around the Beltane season.

Beltane has been a time of fertility celebration for thousands of years, in innumerable cultures. .

There are a lot of myths and folklore surrounding May Day, or Beltane

Some people believe that the Fae are most active around the time of Beltane

In some Practitioner traditions, the battle for dominance is not between an Oak King and a Holly King, but in fact between the May Queen and the Queen of Winter. Learn about the cycle of the triple goddess, and her aspects as Maiden, Mother, and Crone.

During the nineteenth century, it became popular to send someone a message using only flowers. Each one had its own symbolism, so the type of flower you sent was very important.

Beltane

THE FIFTH SABBAT OF THE WHEEL is Beltane, celebrated on May 1st.

Beltane is a festival of sexuality and fertility. The Maypole, central to most Beltane rites, signifies the phallus of the God while the wreath atop the pole signifies the vagina of the Goddess. The Maypole is traditionally cut by the men, and the men dig the hole in which it is placed. The women fill the hole with dirt and construct the wreaths for the Maypole and for their own heads. As the ribbons are woven during the dance, the wreath slowly lowers and so the Divine Marriage is symbolically consummated.

The God is now the Young Phallic Lord. He has become the rutting consort of the Goddess and on Beltane, they mate for the first union of the year. It is at this time that the Goddess becomes pregnant with the new Sun King to whom she will give birth to on the Winter Solstice.

Beltane signifies a time of burgeoning growth, passion, and strength for us. It is a time to explore our own sexuality (whatever the focus we may have---heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or autosexual) and it is a time to play and revel in the majick as spring turns into summer.

Other traditional activities on Beltane include jumping the Bale fire, drinking May wine punch made with sweet woodruff and strawberries, dancing, games, making flower wreaths, and face painting.

Beltane
Beltane Beltane (May 1) celebrates the sacred marriage of the Goddess and God, from whose union will be born the autumn harvest. Almost every Beltane custom in some way symbolizes this marriage. The practice of filling May baskets with symbols of fertility, such as eggs or nuts, is representative of their joining. The custom of weaving the May pole with long strands of colored ribbon is another. The pole represents the phallus of the God, which penetrates the ribbons that make up the birth canal of the Goddess. This act also symbolizes the transformation of the virgin Goddess into her mother form.

Sacred TimeGoing A-Maying & Bringing in the May -- Merry-making and Nature communion. Midpoint between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. In Pagan Rome, Floralia, from April 27-May 3 was the festival of the Flower Goddess Flora and the flowering of Springtime. On May 1, offerings were made to Bona Dea (as Mother Earth), the Lares (household guardian spirits), and Maia (Goddess of Increase) from whom May gets its holiday for the masses, in the twentieth century, May Day has been a workers' holiday in many places. Some say that Mother's Day, in the USA, Mexico, and elsewhere has Pagan roots.MaypoleForms include pole, tree, bush, cross; communal or household; permanent or annual. In Germany, Fir tree was cut on May Eve by young unmarried men, branches removed, decorated, put up in village square, & guarded all night until dance occurred on May Day. In England, permanent Maypoles were erected on village greens In some villages, there also were smaller Maypoles in the yards of households. Maypole ribbon dances, with two circles interweaving; around decorated bush/tree, clockwise circle dances.Flowers & GreenwoodGathering and exchange of Flowers and Greens on May Eve, pre-dawn May Day, Beltane. Decorating homes, barns, and other buildings with Green budding branches, including Hawthorn. Making and wearing of garland wreaths of Flowers and/or Greens. May Baskets were given or placed secretly on doorsteps to friends, shut-ins, lovers, others. May Bowl was punch (wine or non-alcoholic) made of Sweet Woodruff blossoms.Beltane FiresTraditionally, sacred woods kindled by spark from flint or by friction -- in Irish Gaelic, the Beltane Fire has been called teine eigin (fire from rubbing sticks). Jump over the Beltane Fire, move through it, or dance clockwise around it. Livestock was driven through it or between two fires for purification and fertility blessings. In ancient times Druid priests kindled it at sacred places; later times, Christian priests kindled it in fields near the church after performing a Christian church service. Rowan twigs were carried around the fire three times, then hung over hearths to bless homes. In the past, Beltane community fire purification customs included symbolic sacrifice of effigy knobs on the Beltane Cake (of barley) to the fire, or, in medieval times, mock sacrifice of Beltane Carline (Hag) who received blackened piece of Beltane Cake; Maypoles in Spain were each topped with a male effigy which was later burned. Contemporary Pagans burn sacred wood and dried herbs as offerings in their Beltane fires.

May WatersRolling in May Eve dew or washing face in pre-dawn May Day dew for health, luck, beauty. Getting head and hair wet in Beltane rain to bless the head. Blessing springs, ponds, other sacred waters with flowers, garlands, ribbons, other offerings. * Collecting sacred waters and scrying in sacred springs, wells, ponds, other waters.

Sacred Union & FertilityUnion with the Land focus, often with actual mating outside on the Land to bless fields, herds, home. May Queen (May Bride) as personification of the Earth Goddess and Goddesses of Fertility. May King (May Groom) as personification of Vegetation God, Jack-in-Green -- often covered in green leav

Beltane

Beltane, or Bealtaine (Celtic), Mayday, Walburgal (Teutonic), Rudemas
(Mexican Craft), Festival of Tana (Strega) occurs on May 1st, falling
opposite Samhain in the wheel of the year. Beltane marks the start of
summer, and is a time for feasting, merry-making, celebration, and
joy.

It is a time to look outward and forward to the future, and to
prepare for the warm summer months ahead. It is also a time for love
and union, representing the Divine Union of the Goddess and the God.

The rituals may be quite erotic in nature, symbolizing the union of
deity and of the newly impregnated Goddess. It is another fertility
Sabbat, and the Great Rite may also be a part of the ritual.

Dancing around the Maypole may be a part of the festivities. The
original Maypole was a pine tree, which had been previously
decorated for Yule.

It was then stripped of all but its uppermost branches, creating a
phallic symbol. It was strung with white ribbons (symbolizing the
Goddess) and red ribbons (symbolizing the God).

Beltane is thought by Wiccans to be derived from a word meaning
"balefire".

It is traditional to take home a smoldering piece of the Beltane
bonfire to bring blessings to your home during the coming summer
months. It is also believed that the smoke from a Beltane bonfire is
the best to use for ritual purification of tools, jewelry, etc.

If you do your own ritual, why not create a small fire you bless and
take a bit of the sacred ash or flame into your home with you? My
favoutire blessing for a fire is:

I will kindle this fire under the eyes of the Tuatha De Danann under
the eyes of Brigit daughter of the Dagda, under the eyes of Aedh the
bright one. Without fear, jealousy or malice of any kind to anyone
under the sun, but with the light of the Goddess to protect me.

Goddess of the sun, kindle within me a fire of generosity and love
to all:

To my friends, my kindred, my foes and kindle within me a fire of
bravery, eloquence and generosity Of truth, strength and wealth, of
beauty, charm and grace, so that I may inspire with my words. May
this fire be blessed in the eyes of the Ancient but ever-present
Gods.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
