ARIES (March 21-April 19): Your day is full of ups and downs, seemingly beyond your control. This should motivate you to consider why you have so little control and to find ways you can become more in charge of your destiny.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Your attention shifts to success on the job. It's a good day for high-profile work. Your efforts can bring you to the attention of important people. You need to stand out, not blend in.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): While you do well within the job limits you're in, you still feel you're not doing all you could. This should motivate you to make self-improvements, particularly in education, so you are more hirable.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Your ideals face the test of public action. It's important that you stay true to your beliefs and to be sure that anyone representing or associated with you does likewise. A bad apple can generate bad press.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Today, you need to be concerned with people's motives, not just with what they do. You can make suggestions to those who are well-meaning but you need to be alert to those whose motives are base or evil.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You get together with people who share the same ideals as you. This is a good day to get everyone in contact and in communication. Common action is less important than being of common heart and soul.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You may feel low on energy unless you and until you get attention from people. Once you know you have approval, you become motivated. Knowing you will be noticed is very energizing.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You put a lot of importance on relationships but you're sensitive to whether you have immediate success or failure. Don't be discouraged. Without making a pest of yourself, be persistent and kind regardless of what happens.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You can think too much and read too much into small matters. Let little nuisances pass you by; focus on what really matters. You will be happier in the long run when you pay attention to the ultimate goal.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): It's important to put your imaginative and motivational ideas out to the public. Your ideals are catching; you just need to let people know there's someone to meet up with. A crowd encourages joiners.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You feel attached to your family today. Anything that takes your attention or your presence away from them feels like a burden. Many are challenged to work family life in to their work schedule.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Your spiritual ideals are very strong today. The way you feel seems very close to why you were born to be here. Follow your intuition. Logic cannot tell you what motive or what goal is involved.

    May 13, 1607: Jamestown founded

Some 100 English colonists arrive along the west bank of the James River in Virginia to found Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. Dispatched from England by the London Company, the colonists had sailed across the Atlantic aboard the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery.

Upon landing at Jamestown, the first colonial council was held by seven settlers whose names had been chosen and placed in a sealed box by King James I. The council, which included Captain John Smith, an English adventurer, chose Edward Wingfield as its first president. After only two weeks, Jamestown came under attack from warriors from the local Algonquian Native American confederacy, but the Indians were repulsed by the armed settlers. In December of the same year, John Smith and two other colonists were captured by Algonquians while searching for provisions in the Virginia wilderness. His companions were killed, but he was spared, according to a later account by Smith, because of the intercession of Pocahontas, Chief Powhatan's daughter.

During the next two years, disease, starvation, and more Native American attacks wiped out most of the colony, but the London Company continually sent more settlers and supplies. The severe winter of 1609 to 1610, which the colonists referred to as the "starving time," killed most of the Jamestown colonists, leading the survivors to plan a return to England in the spring. However, on June 10, Thomas West De La Warr, the newly appointed governor of Virginia, arrived with supplies and convinced the settlers to remain at Jamestown. In 1612, John Rolfe cultivated the first tobacco at Jamestown, introducing a successful source of livelihood. On April 5, 1614, Rolfe married Pocahontas, thus assuring a temporary peace with Chief Powhatan.

The death of Powhatan in 1618 brought about a resumption of conflict with the Algonquians, including an attack led by Chief Opechancanough in 1622 that nearly wiped out the settlement. The English engaged in violent reprisals against the Algonquians, but there was no further large-scale fighting until 1644, when Opechancanough led his last uprising and was captured and executed at Jamestown. In 1646, the Algonquian Confederacy agreed to give up much of its territory to the rapidly expanding colony, and, beginning in 1665, its chiefs were appointed by the governor of Virginia.

"But the great spirit has provided you and me with an opportunity for study in nature's university, the forests, the rivers, the mountains, and the animals which include us."
    -- -- Walking Buffalo, STONEY
What we really need to learn is how to live life. Nature is the greatest university when we want to learn about balance, harmony, the Natural Laws and how to live life. But we will never learn unless we spend time in the "living university." Nature is full of examples, lessons, and exercises about life. Nature will help humans learn. Nature will help humans heal. Nature will help with Medicine, knowledge, and healing. The reason our Elders are so wise is because they have attended the right educational system - nature's university.

Great Spirit, help me to become wise.

May 13, 1568: Mary Queen of Scots defeated

At the Battle of Langside, the forces of Mary Queen of Scots are defeated by a confederacy of Scottish Protestants under James Stewart, the regent of her son, King James VI of Scotland. During the battle, which was fought out in the southern suburbs of Glasgow, a cavalry charge routed Mary's 6,000 Catholic troops, and they fled the field. Three days later, Mary escaped to Cumberland, England, where she sought protection from Queen Elizabeth I.

In 1542, while just six days old, Mary ascended to the Scottish throne upon the death of her father, King James V. Her great-uncle was Henry VIII, the Tudor king of England. Mary's mother sent her to be raised in the French court, and in 1558 she married the French dauphin, who became King Francis II of France in 1559 and died in 1560. After Francis' death, Mary returned to Scotland to assume her designated role as the country's monarch. In 1565, she married her English cousin Lord Darnley, another Tudor, which reinforced her claim to the English throne and angered Queen Elizabeth.

In 1567, Darnley was mysteriously killed in an explosion at Kirk o' Field, and Mary's lover, James Hepburn, the earl of Bothwell, was the key suspect. Although Bothwell was acquitted of the charge, his marriage to Mary in the same year enraged the nobility, and Mary was forced to abdicate in favor of her son by Darnley, James. In 1568, she escaped from captivity and raised a substantial army but was defeated and fled to England. Queen Elizabeth I initially welcomed Mary but was soon forced to put her cousin under house arrest after Mary became the focus of various English Catholic and Spanish plots to overthrow her.

In 1586, a major Catholic plot to murder Elizabeth was uncovered, and Mary was brought to trial, convicted for complicity, and sentenced to death. On February 8, 1587, Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded for treason at Fotheringhay Castle in England. Her son, King James VI of Scotland, calmly accepted his mother's execution, and upon Queen Elizabeth's death in 1603, he became James I, king of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You feel a renewal of confidence and purpose today. Your spiritual sensibilities are strong, and you act with resolve to live by them and to manifest them in the world as well.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You are extremely sensitive and vulnerable to public opinion today. Avoid public exposure. Anything you do could be turned scandalous with the right spin. Spend time with people who are sympathetic with your situation.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You are putting your beliefs on a different basis now, perhaps through some kind of formal induction. You want to join a community of beliefs and action because you need to belong to a greater cause.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You tend to be too passive in a relationship. When someone tells you what to do, look inside yourself and ask whether it's the right thing, whether it's what you want to do. Orders must pass through this filter of your true character.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You can see that you have resources that you can contribute to a worthy cause. For many, this can mean a small but significant donation but for a few it can mean a big sacrifice that's well worth it.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You are very aware of your responsibilities today. A lot of people rely on you to make the right decisions. It's important that you look at your true mandate and your true allegiances.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You tend to retire from stressful situations today. Many feel the need to relax and heal, whether physically or emotionally. A lot of tension drains out of you now so take advantage of it.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You are very inquisitive but many tend to think they know all about it anyway. It's a challenge to put yourself in the position of a student but, once you do, you are poised to step upward in mastery.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You're apt to withdraw from public struggles to renew yourself for later. You're not disinterested, just in need of restoration. Some may need continued encouragement to get through this period.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): It's important that you take a reality check today. Your idealism is strong, may be extreme, even to the point of delusional. You've pushed ahead just so far, and be content with that.

"Prayer is the best answer to all of the trials that face us, because without prayer, even if we succeed in accomplishing some great goal in the eyes of men, we have failed in our sacred responsibilities, and thus we have failed in what is truly important."
    -- Thomas Yellowtail, CROW
What are our sacred responsibilities? One is to be of maximum service to the Creator, and two is to serve the people. In a way, it's like the Great Spirit is the employer and we are the employees. We live each day, do what we do, accomplish our goals, face our difficulties, overcome them all to the Glory of the Creator. We do these things to make Him proud! Even if we work for a company, agency or tribe, they are not really our employer; the Creator is our employer. Working for the Creator is better than working for a human being, because each night we can talk to the Creator and ask Him, "Well, how did I do today?". He answers back each night, "I'm proud of you, my child; sleep well, and in the morning I'll give you a new set of growing experiences.".

Great Spirit, today, let me work for you. You will be my new boss

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You have opportunities but you must pursue them tirelessly today. You don't have anything handed over easily but must prove you're truly and deeply committed. You have to stay in it through all difficulties.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): News from foreign countries is of most interest to you today. You have cause to question official stories, or you disseminate alternate versions from the mainstream's. In your high regard for truth, you dismiss what doesn't make sense.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Projects move slowly today. You need patience and don't expect instant fame and success. An older or a more experienced person can be helpful if you allow. Take advantage of any help that's offered.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): This is a good day for getting down to business. You need to be organized in order to make an impressive presentation and significant partners can assist in prepping you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): This is a good day to take instruction from someone more experienced. You can realize the mistakes you've made and so you can make corrections and build on an improved plan.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You're feeling competitive today but you use charm as your method of getting head, not confrontation. Providing a useful service in a way that stands out is key to success.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You want to volunteer your help because you like to decide who really needs it. On the other hand, people who come asking or demanding it only create suspicion. You dislike being made to feel obligated.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Important agreements have to be renegotiated today, perhaps at a very fundamental level. Perhaps new information comes to light that changes everything. It's not a good idea to resist or place blame.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You can be forced into a cooperative situation today. Not that you want to be argumentative but you would rather be doing something else. Successful performance, however, brings positive results.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): To be truly creative, you have to think for yourself. Don't ask people what you should do but be inquisitive about people's desires, tastes and preferences. Be informed but don't let individual opinions control you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can get involved in projects that promote pride in your family or in your heritage. For some, religious or political affiliation becomes important. A hard-won educational accomplishment is possible.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): This is a good day to get involved in neighborhood affairs. A local concert, community action or other gathering is helpful in getting to know people you don't ordinarily meet, to mutual advantage.

"We must have respect and understanding for women and all female life on this Earth which bears the sacred gift of life."
-- Traditional Circle of Elders. ONONDAGA
At a gathering of Native Elders we were told that many men of today had lost their ability to look at the Woman in a sacred way. They said we were only looking at Her in a physical sense and had lost the ability to look at Her sacredness. They said the Woman has a powerful position in the Unseen World. She has the special ability to bring forth life. They told us to start showing Her respect and to look upon her in a sacred manner. We must start this today.

Grandfather, show me how to see in a sacred way

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You're prone to emphasize faults rather than virtues. It's important that you turn your attention to the positive. You are afraid to take risks but you should try something, however small, to build confidence.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You're apt to react only to the provocations of the moment, heedless of the consequences. Some are aware only of a buildup of resentment and act from that. It's important to put events in perspective and cool off.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You're prone to lose a sense of romance today. You can feel strong, negative emotions in its place. Jealousy, dislike or even hate is likely to develop. Treat relationships carefully and don't destroy any of them.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You give people the sense that they can confide in you. You can keep secrets and many can provide guidance as well. This is a day when you are included in select information.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Your job involves more thought and communication than usual today. You may have occasion to study your savings or job benefits or access them in ways you normally don't need to.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You tend to argue first and believe later. You could alienate someone you need to listen to. Don't test people's patience or persistence. You could be the one losing out because you're hostile and unreceptive.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You fear being stalled or held back so you may be prone to be aggressive in compensation. You're particularly sensitive to embarrassment and react badly if someone makes you look silly.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): This is a good day for clearing the air with people, especially someone you're romantically attached to. If someone seems quarrelsome, don't avoid it; turn it into a constructive conversation.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You actively promote a cause you believe in today. You may feel the need to push events along, generally. There's something people need to know about and you do your best to get it to them.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You need to speak out. If you hold back from the beginning, your reticence will only be strengthened. Instead, get a conversation going; whether people agree or disagree, the exchange of important information will start.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): This is a good day for devising plans that can increase income. You are generally concerned about ensuring you have enough money. Be sure that expenditures are investments toward that end.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): It is easy to let anger simmer but it is more productive to air grievances while they are still relatively small. Even when it seems you have no choice to comply, express your reservations and the reasons why.

    -- Nippawanock, ARAPAHOE
If not now, when? If not me, who? To walk the path of the heart is a great honor. Every human has the choice to walk this path, but very few will decide to make it. Why? Well, because you can't act and behave like everyone else behaves. You must be the person who will learn to look within. You must be the person who will be fully accountable for yourself. You must be the person who prays and meditates. You must be the person who will sacrifice. You must decide to be a Peaceful Warrior. What will you decide today?

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You may focus on change for its own sake today. You can lose sight of a particular goal. As long as the status quo is destroyed, you equate that with progress -- perhaps incorrectly.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You're not satisfied unless your tasks are done well and thoroughly. You may need to make yourself stop because of a deadline diminishing returns for your effort.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): There are developments today that seem to disconnect you from the past. You have the opportunity to step into the life you've been trying to make if you can accept this sort of discontinuity.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): There is a shocking development today. It can have an impact on your job or your social status generally. Accept the change. What's important is how you incorporate it so that you come out of it ahead.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You're eager to learn today. You become aware of a new perspective, which seems more useful and fitting to reality than what you've been believing. You switch ideas; the fringe is becoming mainstream.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You are willing to go to extremes when taking risks today. You need to understand what purpose is being served by this. Is it a genuine goal or are you simply drawing attention to yourself?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): There is a change in relationships today. There may be someone who no long fits in your life and drops away but there is just as easily someone new who can enter who fits in perfectly with your new developments.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Be alert to new developments at work or in your health. Go with the opportunity for change or be alert to trends. Something is happening that's out of your control, yet you can adapt to it if you try.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): There are intense feelings in romance today. A powerful attraction or separation is likely. Also be alert to potential crises in your finances, which you can ride out if you allow basic changes in your approach.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Events help you to understand yourself at a deep psychological level. Tradition or habit meets the need for change -- even revolution. You have to make the choice now that the contradiction is glaringly evident.

The East, South, West, and North are the powers of the four directions. The Creator makes these powers available to do things. We pray to the Creator to give us the power to do these things. Often, we are given these powers for awhile, then these powers disappear. Power is given and taken from us by the Great Spirit, the source of power. During the time we have this power, we should be responsible and use the power in a good way. Many good things can be accomplished when we realize where this power really comes from.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Your energy is devoted to several distinct but related projects today. You need to coordinate several approaches at once. You need to be able to switch at need and not emphasize one to the neglect of the others.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You need to balance compassion with professionalism today. Your approach tends to be impersonal but your dedication can't be questioned. Try to make others feel comforted

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You are awakened to how much you are being mentally conditioned. You go against this now and try to find ways to think independently. Emphasize critical thinking, not just contrariness, and explore ideas you've neglected or rejected.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You are enthusiastic today and you can make important decisions at a moment's notice. You can be a good critic but don't take it to an extreme. Try giving advice only when it's asked for.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You're concerned about how much attention you get or what kind it is. You can be prone to change your feelings at the slightest excuse. You are challenged to keep feelings that are noble and valuable.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): It's important to be able to switch between introspection and external activities today. Monitor your thoughts and keep them positive. Having a goal and having thoughts supporting your motivation are both very important today.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You feel you need to take charge and give orders today. You can also get on some people's nerves by this. You need to learn how to be persuasive without raising ire or resistance. Enthusiasm is the key.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The demands of your job can disrupt your family life. Balancing the two isn't easy but the rewards can be desirable. You must consider carefully where the greater need lies and what that need actually is.

In May 1430, the Burgundians laid siege to Compiegne, and Joan stole into the town under the cover of darkness to aid in its defense. On May 23, while leading a sortie against the Burgundians, she was captured. The Burgundians sold her to the English, and in March 1431 she went on trial before ecclesiastical authorities in Rouen on charges of heresy. Her most serious crime, according to the tribunal, was her rejection of church authority in favor of direct inspiration from God. After refusing to submit to the church, her sentence was read on May 24: She was to be turned over to secular authorities and executed. Reacting with horror to the pronouncement, Joan agreed to recant and was condemned instead to perpetual imprisonment.

Ordered to put on women's clothes, she obeyed, but a few days later the judges went to her cell and found her dressed again in male attire. Questioned, she told them that St. Catherine and St. Margaret had reproached her for giving in to the church against their will. She was found to be a relapsed heretic and on May 29 ordered handed over to secular officials. On May 30, Joan, 19 years old, was burned at the stake at the Place du Vieux-Marche in Rouen. Before the pyre was lit, she instructed a priest to hold high a crucifix for her to see and to shout out prayers loud enough to be heard above the roar of the flames.

As a source of military inspiration, Joan of Arc helped turn the Hundred Years War firmly in France's favor. By 1453, Charles VII had reconquered all of France except for Calais, which the English relinquished in 1558. In 1920, Joan of Arc, one of the great heroes of French history, was recognized as a Christian saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Her feast day is May 30.

At Rouen in English-controlled Normandy, Joan of Arc, the peasant girl who became the savior of France, is burned at the stake for heresy.

Joan was born in 1412, the daughter of a tenant farmer at Domremy, on the borders of the duchies of Bar and Lorraine. In 1415, the Hundred Years War between England and France entered a crucial phase when the young King Henry V of England invaded France and won a series of decisive victories against the forces of King Charles VI. By the time of Henry's death in August 1422, the English and their French-Burgundian allies controlled Aquitaine and most of northern France, including Paris. Charles VI, long incapacitated, died one month later, and his son, Charles, regent from 1418, prepared to take the throne. However, Reims, the traditional city of French coronation, was held by the Anglo-Burgundians, and the Dauphin (heir apparent to the French throne) remained uncrowned. Meanwhile, King Henry VI of England, the infant son of Henry V and Catherine of Valois, the daughter of Charles VI, was proclaimed king of France by the English.

Joan's village of Domremy lay on the frontier between the France of the Dauphin and that of the Anglo-Burgundians. In the midst of this unstable environment, Joan began hearing "voices" of three Christian saints—St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret. When she was about 16, these voices exhorted her to aid the Dauphin in capturing Reims and therefore the French throne. In May 1428, she traveled to Vaucouleurs, a stronghold of the Dauphin, and told the captain of the garrison of her visions. Disbelieving the young peasant girl, he sent her home. In January 1429, she returned, and the captain, impressed by her piety and determination, agreed to allow her passage to the Dauphin at Chinon.

Dressed in men's clothes and accompanied by six soldiers, she reached the Dauphin's castle at Chinon in February 1429 and was granted an audience. Charles hid himself among his courtiers, but Joan immediately picked him out and informed him of her divine mission. For several weeks, Charles had Joan questioned by theologians at Poitiers, who concluded that, given his desperate straits, the Dauphin would be well-advised to make use of this strange and charismatic girl.

Charles furnished her with a small army, and on April 27, 1429, she set out for Orleans, besieged by the English since October 1428. On April 29, as a French sortie distracted the English troops on the west side of Orleans, Joan entered unopposed by its eastern gate. She brought greatly needed supplies and reinforcements and inspired the French to a passionate resistance. She personally led the charge in several battles and on May 7 was struck by an arrow. After quickly dressing her wound, she returned to the fight, and the French won the day. On May 8, the English retreated from Orleans.

During the next five weeks, Joan and the French commanders led the French into a string of stunning victories over the English. On July 16, the royal army reached Reims, which opened its gates to Joan and the Dauphin. The next day, Charles VII was crowned king of France, with Joan standing nearby holding up her standard: an image of Christ in judgment. After the ceremony, she knelt before Charles, joyously calling him king for the first time.

On September 8, the king and Joan attacked Paris. During the battle, Joan carried her standard up to the earthworks and called on the Parisians to surrender the city to the king of France. She was wounded but continued to rally the king's troops until Charles ordered an end to the unsuccessful siege. That year, she led several more small campaigns, capturing the town of Saint-Pierre-le-Moitier. In December, Charles ennobled Joan, her parents, and her brothers.

"Sell a country? Why not sell the air, the great sea, as well as the Earth? Did not the Great Spirit make them all for the use of his children?"
    -- Tecumseh, SHAWNEE
The White Man's way is to possess, control, and divide. It has always been difficult for Indian people to understand this. There are certain things we cannot own that must be shared. The Land is one of these things. We need to re-look at what we are doing to the Earth. We are digging in her veins and foolishly diminishing the natural resources. We are not living in balance. We do not own the Earth; the Earth owns us. Today, let us ponder the true relationship between the Earth and ourselves.

Great Spirit, today, let me see the Earth as you would have me see Her

We need to be careful about judging the old ones when we talk. At first they may not make sense to us. Maybe we'll say they're old fashioned and don't understand. But the old ones do understand! When they speak, listen very carefully. Often it will take weeks or maybe even years before we understand what they are really saying. This is the way of Wisdom. We need to listen, listen, listen.

"IN THE BEGINNING were the Instructions... The Instruction was to live in a good way and be respectful to everybody and everything."
    -- Vickie Downey, TEWA/Tesuque Pueblo
A long time ago, in the beginning, the Creator gave to all people and to all things the Wisdom and the knowledge of how to live in harmony. Some tribes call these teachings the original Instructions, the original teachings, or the Great Laws. All of Nature still lives and survives according to these teachings. In modern times, human beings are searching for the Instructions. Many churches claim they have these Instructions. Where are these teachings? The Instructions are written in our hearts.

    "Wakan Tanka never stops creating."

The Medicine Wheel teaches about change. It says that which is created will fall apart; that which is loose, will be used to create new. In other words, everything on Earth is participating in a constant change that is being directed by an order of laws and principles which were originated by the Great Spirit. We humans are equipped with natural change abilities. We have the ability to vision; we can use imagination and imagery; we can change belief, attitude, habits, and expectations. We need to know ourselves and we need to know how we work inside to enable us to change naturally.

Great Spirit, teach me to change in harmony.

"It is not through the great skill of the hunter himself that success is achieved, but through the hunter's awareness of his place in Creation and his relationship to all things."
    -- Thomas Yellowtail, CROW
If only the human being could understand the power of proper relationships, the need for power and control could be abandoned. It's not what is going on that matters, but how we look at what is going on. It's our relationship to it that counts. Nothing in the world has any meaning except the meaning we give to it. To be more effective at this, we need to consider our relationship with the Creator. Our relationship to the Great Spirit determines how we will perceive the meanings we put to places, people, institutions, and things. We need to let the Creator tell us and guide our thoughts about these relationships. Any relationship that we have that is causing problems means we need to pray for a new point of view.

Creator, let me see the world and the people through your eyes.

    Jun 6, 1683:
    The Ashmolean opens

The Ashmolean, the world's first university museum, opens in Oxford, England.

At the time of the English Restoration, Oxford was the center of scientific activity in England. In 1677, English archaeologist Elias Ashmole donated his collection of curiosities to Oxford University, and the school's directors planned the construction of a building to display the items permanently. Acclaimed English architect Sir Christopher Wren was commissioned for the job, and on June 6, 1683, the Ashmolean opened.

The first modern museum, the Ashmolean was designed to display its collections, organized so that Oxford University could use it for teaching purposes, and was regularly opened to the public. In 1845, architect Charles R. Cockerell completed the construction of a new home for the museum's rapidly growing collection on Oxford's Beaumont Street. Today, the collection at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology ranges in time from the earliest implements of man, made about 500,000 years ago, to 20th century works of art. Among the collection of antiquities and artwork are curiosities like Guy Fawkes' lantern and relics like the Alfred Jewel.

"We need to save those Elders who cannot speak for themselves -- the trees."
-- Haida Gwaii, Traditional Circle of Elders
The trees are the Elders of the Earth. Go to the forest or to the mountains and find a young tree. Then find an old tree. Spend time with each. Sit by the young tree and listen to your thoughts. Then move to an old tree and listen to your thoughts again. Just being in the presence of an old tree, you will feel more calm. Your thoughts will contain wisdom and your answers will be deeper. Why is this so? These old trees know more, have heard more, and are the Elders of the Earth. We must ensure these trees live so we can learn from them.

My Creator, help me to protect the trees and listen to them

In the Spiritual World there is a spiritual Law. The Law says; like attracts like. This means whatever mental picture we hold inside our minds we will attract from the Universe. To make this Law work we must maintain a constant picture. Jun 8, 632:
    Founder of Islam dies

In Medina, located in present-day Saudi Arabia, Muhammad, one of the most influential religious and political leaders in history, dies in the arms of Aishah, his third and favorite wife.

Born in Mecca of humble origins, Muhammad married a wealthy widow at 25 years old and lived the next 15 years as an unremarkable merchant. In 610, in a cave in Mount Hira north of Mecca, he had a vision in which he heard God, speaking through the angel Gabriel, command him to become the Arab prophet of the "true religion." Thus began a lifetime of religious revelations, which he and others collected as the Qur'an. These revelations provided the foundation for the Islamic religion. Muhammad regarded himself as the last prophet of the Judaic-Christian tradition, and he adopted the theology of these older religions while introducing new doctrines. His inspired teachings also brought unity to the Bedouin tribesmen of Arabia, an event that had sweeping consequences for the rest of the world.

By the summer of 622, Muhammad had gained a substantial number of converts in Mecca, leading the city's authorities, who had a vested interest in preserving the city's pagan religion, to plan his assassination. Muhammad fled to Medina, a city some 200 miles north of Mecca, where he was given a position of considerable political power. At Medina, he built a model theocratic state and administered a rapidly growing empire. In 629, Muhammad returned to Mecca as a conqueror. During the next two and a half years, numerous disparate Arab tribes converted to his religion. By his death on June 8, 632, he was the effective ruler of all southern Arabia, and his missionaries, or legates, were active in the Eastern Empire, Persia, and Ethiopia.

During the next century, vast conquests continued under Muhammad's successors and allies, and the Muslim advance was not halted until the Battle of Tours in France in 732. By this time, the Muslim empire, among the largest the world had ever seen, stretched from India across the Middle East and North Africa, and up through Western Europe's Iberian peninsula. The spread of Islam continued after the end of the Arab conquest, and many cultures in Africa and Asia voluntarily adopted the religion. Today, Islam is the world's second-largest religion.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): It's important to keep your range of learning broad today. You can form unlikely associations that others won't perceive. This is the key to creativity now and the possibility of an innovation.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Tension builds today, especially in a professional relationship. Feelings and expectations have to be sorted out fairly. Look past an impassioned complaint to discern the underlying needs that are not being met.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You're in danger of being led down the wrong path by someone you trust. Make yourself doubt and question. Be sure you understand the facts and apply your own judgment about whether you should go along.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Seek assistance carefully today. It may not be a good idea to advertise how little you know. Potential mentors could be too busy for you. You're challenged to turn a sticky situation to your benefit.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your imagination is intrigued by people and events long ago and far away. Exotic locales get your rapt attention. Generally, anything that seems exotic can become the object or your fascination.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You don't fit in well with the company you keep. You can feel alone in a crowd, the exception to the social rule. Actively find a venue that makes you genuinely happy, instead of suffering.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): It's important to ask questions. You can absorb information like a sponge today but you also need to engage your critical faculties and question conclusions that are being presented as basic facts.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): An important relationship features irritation today. Don't make a big thing of it. A passing mood should be allowed to come and go, with no lasting consequence.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Your bravery comes from being naive today. You may be in some danger without realizing it but some are willing to take risky dangers without understanding the gravity of the situation. Don't do foolish things.

    Jun 9, 1534:
    Cartier discovers St. Lawrence River

French navigator Jacques Cartier becomes the first European explorer to discover the St. Lawrence River in present-day Quebec, Canada.

In 1534, Cartier was commissioned by King Francis I of France to explore the northern American lands in search of riches and the rumored Northwest Passage to Asia. That year, Cartier entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence by the Strait of Belle Isle, explored its barren north coast for a distance, and then traveled down the west shore of Newfoundland to Cape Anguille. From there, he discovered Magdalen and Prince Edward islands, explored Chaleur Bay, and claimed Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula for France. He then discovered the inlet of the St. Lawrence River, sailed north to Anticosti Island, and then returned to Europe.

Previously thought to be a barren and inhospitable region, Cartier's discoveries of the warm and fertile lands around the Gulf of St. Lawrence inspired Francis I to dispatch him on a second expedition in 1535. On this voyage, he ascended the St. Lawrence to the native village of Hochelaga, site of the modern-day city of Montreal. On his return voyage to France, he explored Cabot Strait along the southern coast of Newfoundland. Cartier led a final expedition to the region in 1541, as part of an unsuccessful colonization effort. His extensive geographical discoveries formed the basis of France's claims to the rich St. Lawrence Valley in the 17th century.

Every part of this country is sacred to my people. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and grove has been hallowed by some fond memory or some sad experience of my tribe. Even the rocks, which seem to lie dumb as they swelter in the sun along the silent shore in solemn grandeur, thrill with memories of past events connected with the fate of my people.
    -- -Chief Seattle, SUQUAMISH
Native people say the Earth is sacred. Some places on Earth will feel more sacred than others. You can often feel the sacredness of these places because of what has happened on them. If you do a ceremony on a certain place and return later, whatever happened before will still be there to help you. Even if someone you didn't know did something on the Earth and you come along later, the powers will be there to help you. This is why the Earth is sacred and these special places are sacred spots.

My Creator, let the powers of the sacred places help the people today

"Each day, whatever I am doing, I am always praying and thinking of God."
    -- Thomas Yellowtail, CROW
Have you ever tried going through your day and carrying on a conversation with the Creator? Many of our Elders live in prayer. They talk to the Creator like the Creator is their best friend. It is easiest to do this if we pray in the morning and ask the Great Spirit to direct our thinking. When the Creator is involved in guiding our lives, we will have less stress, anxiety, and tension. Maybe this is something we would like to try today. "Oh, Creator, look at the Sun, how beautiful you have made it. Oh, look at this child, isn't she just beautiful! Well, Creator, I'm not sure how I should do this task, what do you think? This person is starting to irritate me; I need your help to redirect my thinking. Thanks for returning me to a peaceful mind." Remember, the Creator also has a sense of humor.

Grandfather, Grandmother, let me walk in prayer

    Jun 11, 1509:
    Henry VIII marries first wife

King Henry VIII of England marries Catherine of Aragon, the first of six wives he will have in his lifetime. When Catherine failed to produce a male heir, Henry divorced her against the will of the Roman Catholic Church, thus precipitating the Protestant Reformation in England.

Henry went on to have five more wives; two of whom--Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard--he executed for alleged adultery after he grew tired of them. His only surviving child by Catherine of Aragon, Mary, ascended to the throne upon the death of her half-brother, Edward VI, in 1553. In 1558, Mary was succeeded by her half-sister, Elizabeth, the only surviving child of Henry VIII by Anne Boleyn. She was crowned Queen Elizabeth I.

"Behold, my bothers, the spring has come; the earth has received the embraces of the sun and we shall soon see the results of that love!"
    -- Sitting Bull, SIOUX
Spring is the season of love. Spring is the season of new life, new relationships. It is the springtime that really reacts to the new position of Father Sun. New life forms all over the planet. Life is abundant. New cycles are created. Mother Earth changes colors, the flowers are abundant. It is the time for humans to observe nature and let nature create within us the feeling of Spring. We should let ourselves renew. We should let go of the feeling of Winter. We should be joyful and energetic.

My Maker, let me, today, feel the feelings of Spring

    Jun 13, 1381:
    Peasant army marches into London

During the Peasants' Revolt, a large mob of English peasants led by Wat Tyler marches into London and begins burning and looting the city. Several government buildings were destroyed, prisoners were released, and a judge was beheaded along with several dozen other leading citizens.

The Peasants' Revolt had its origins in a severe manifestation of bubonic plague in the late 1340s, which killed nearly a third of the population of England. The scarcity of labor brought on by the Black Death led to higher wages and a more mobile peasantry. Parliament, however, resisted these changes to its traditional feudal system and passed laws to hold down wages while encouraging landlords to reassert their ancient manorial rights. In 1380, peasant discontent reached a breaking point when Parliament restricted voting rights through an increase of the poll tax, and the Peasants' Revolt began.

In Kent, a county in southeast England, the rebels chose Wat Tyler as their leader, and he led his growing "army" toward London, capturing the towns of Maidstone, Rochester, and Canterbury along the way. After he was denied a meeting with King Richard II, he led the rebels into London on June 13, 1381, burning and plundering the city. The next day, the 14-year-old king met with peasant leaders at Mile End and agreed to their demands to abolish serfdom and restrictions on the marketplace. However, fighting continued elsewhere at the same time, and Tyler led a peasant force against the Tower of London, capturing the fortress and executing the archbishop of Canterbury.

On June 15, the king met Tyler at Smithfield, and Tyler presented new demands, including one calling for the abolishment of church property. During the meeting, the mayor of London, angered at Tyler's arrogance in the presence of the king, lunged at the rebel leader with a sword, fatally wounding him. As Tyler lay dying on the ground, Richard managed to keep the peasant mob calm until the mayor returned with armed troops. Hundreds of rebels were executed and the rest dispersed. During the next few days, the Peasant Revolt was put down with severity all across England, and Richard revoked all the concessions he had made to the peasants at Mile End. For several weeks, Wat Tyler's head was displayed on a pole in a London field.

"We have an old saying, Everything living must die. Only the rocks and mountains are forever."
-- Archie Fire Lame Deer, LAKOTA
The Creator designed all life to happen in a circle. For example, the cycle of life for the human being is Baby, Youth, Adult, Elder, then we die. The trees and the leaves happen in a circle; the leaves bud, then the leaves mature, next the leaves change color, and at last they fall off the tree to return to the Mother Earth. The birds bear their young, raise their young, then they die. The salmon are born, swim to the ocean, live their lives, swim back to the spawning grounds, then die. All aspects of the Life Cycle should be honored.

Great Spirit, today, let me enjoy today
