History:
Ásatrú is frequently regarded as one of the Neopagan family of religions. That family includes Wicca, Celtic Druidism, and re-creations of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and other ancient Pagan religions. However, many Ásatrúar prefer the term "Heathen" or "Pagan" rather than "Neopagan;" they look upon their tradition as "not just a branch on the Neopagan tree" but as a separate tree. Unlike Wicca, which has gradually evolved into many different traditions, the reconstruction of Ásatrú has been based on the surviving historical record. Its followers have maintained it as closely as possible to the original religion of the Norse people.

Asatru or 'satr' is an Icelandic word which is a translation of the Danish word "Asetro." Asetro was "first seen in 1885 in an article in the periodical "Fjallkonan". The next recorded instance was in "Hei'inn si'ur ' 'slandi" ("Heathen traditions in Iceland.") by 'lafur Briem (Reykjav'k, 1945)." It means "belief in the ?i>sir," the Gods. "Ásatrú" is a combination of "Asa" which is the possessive case of the word 'sir (Æsir) and "Tru" which means belief or religion.

Throughout Scandinavia the religion is called Forn Si'r (which means the Ancient way or tradition), Forn sed (the Old custom), Nordisk sed (Nordic custom), or Hedensk sed (Pagan custom). Other names are:

Norse Heathenism, Germanic Heathenism, the Elder Troth, the Old Way, Asetro, Vor Si r (our way), Forn Si r (Ancient way), Forn sed (the old custom), Nordisk sed (Nordic custom), or Hedensk sed (Pagan custom), Odinism or Folkish 'satr'.

The religion's origin is lost in antiquity. At its peak, it covered all of Northern Europe. Countries gradually converted to Christianity. In 1000 CE, Iceland became the second last Norse culture to convert. Their prime motivation was economic. Sweden was ruled by a Pagan king until 1085 CE.

Icelandic poet Goði Sveinbjorn Beinteinsson promoted government recognition of Asatru as a legitimate religion; this status was granted in 1972. Since the early 1970's, the religion has been in a period of rapid growth in the former Norse countries, as well as in Europe and North America.

From the Poetic Edda and the Völsunga saga.
1 Sigurd is sitting naked in front of the fire preparing the dragon heart, from Fafnir, for his foster-father Regin, who is Fafnir's brother. The heart is not finished yet, and when Sigurd touches it, he burns himself and sticks his finger into his mouth. As he has tasted dragon blood, he starts to understand the birds' song.
2 The birds say that Regin will not keep his promise of reconciliation and will try to kill Sigurd, which causes Sigurd to cut off Regin's head.
3 Regin is dead beside his own head, his smithing tools with which he reforged Sigurd's sword Gram are scattered around him, and
4Regin's horse is laden will the dragon's treasure.
5 The previous event when Sigurd killed Fafnir.
6 Otr, from the saga's beginning.

The Oseberg ship burial tapestry (dating no later than 834 AD, when the ship was buried with its two ladies in Vestfold, Norway) shows a scene of apparent human sacrifice – or initiation – where nine males are hanging from a large tree in a grove of serpents.
Three ladies (the fates?) hover above.
The tapestry may possibly give some archaeological support to the written sources about the Uppsala sacrificial grove where nine males are said to have been hung in a sacred grove.

FREYR [“Lord” (compare Old English Frea), Yngvi or Yngvi-Freyr,Fricco].
Freya's twin brother, a god of peace and a brave warrior, Freyr is
the most prominent and most beautiful of the male members of the Vanir.
He is a God known by many titles: the God of Success; King of the Alfs (Elves); horned God of fertility (similar to the Celtic Cernunnos or Herne).
His chariot-pulling golden boar, "Gullenbursti" (representing daybreak)
his sacred symbol, is associated with war and with fertility.
Freyr is wedded to Gerda, the Jotun.
Freyr's shield bearer and servant is Skirnir, to whom he gave his sword, which Skirnir demanded as a reward for making Gerd his wife.
At Ragnarok, he will battle without weapons or with the horn of an elk,
and will be the first to be killed by the fire giant Surt.

Elli is the Teutonic goddess of old age.
She was also a symbol for the aging itself.
She is the embodiment of the crone and the wisdom and strength of the elderly. According to ancient Norse myth, Elli was so strong that no one can defeat Her. To test Thor's strength when the thunder god visited, Thor, not knowing who she was agreed to have a wrestling match.

EIKTHYMIR
- this was the deer that stood on the roof of VALHALLA,
and ate from the leaves of the great oak tree LAERRAD.
From the horns dripped water,
which was where all the rivers in the world came from.

"Flames flare fierce o'er roof and rafter,
High the hubbub, loud the laughter;
Hist with croak, and bark with howl,
Ravens flit and gray wolves prowl:
Father mine, for lesser matter
Erst I fleshed my maiden steel
Hear me swear amid this clatter,
Soon our foes my sword shall feel"

"Fingolfin vs Morgoth"
Full of anger and despair, Rochallor rode his magnificent horse, and set off alone, without anyone being able to contain it. Passed through Dor-nu-Fauglith like a wind amid the dust, and all who saw their onslaught fled in fright, believing the Oromë own come. Because he was dominated by a furious madness, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar. So, arrived alone at the gates of Angband, sounded his horn and struck once more the gates of brass, challenging Morgoth to report for a fight man to man. And Morgoth came. That was the last time in those wars that he passed through the doors of his stronghold, and what it says is not accepted the challenge of good grado.Pois, though his power was greater than anything that exists in the world, he was the only Valar he knew fear.

In Norse mythology, Musphelhein (or Musspell) means "House of Desolation" and is also known as "Land of Fire". It was a hot zone where it was said to have originated the first living beings. It is located in the South, just below the disc Midgard, as opposed to Niflheim in the North. It is the home of the fire giants and their master, Sultur, the eternal companion of the fire, as is mentioned in the Poetic Edda, is the most powerful of them and said that the survivors will be those who will fight the Ragnarok.

In Norse mythology, Fenrir (Old Norse for "pit dweller"), Fenrisulfr (Old Norse: "Fenris wolf"), Hróðvitnir (Old Norse: "fame Wolf"), or Vánagandr (Old Norse: "monster Ván "river) is a monstrous wolf. Fenrir is attested in verse Edda, compiled in the thirteenth century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, written in the thirteenth century by Snorri Sturluson. Fenrir is the father of wolves Skoll and Hati, is a son of Loki, and is foretold to kill the god Odin during the events of Ragnarök, but in turn be killed by Odin's son Víðarr.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
