Divination (from Latin divinare "to foresee, to be inspired by a god", related to divinus, divine) is the attempt to gain insight into a question or situation by way of a standardized process or ritual. Diviners ascertain their interpretations of how a querent should proceed by reading signs, events, or omens, or through alleged contact with a supernatural agency. Divination can be seen as a systematic method with which to organize what appear to be disjointed, random facets of existence such that they provide insight into a problem at hand. If a distinction is to be made between divination and fortune-telling, divination has a formal or ritual and often social character, usually in a religious context, as seen in traditional African medicine; while fortune-telling is a more everyday practice for personal purposes. Particular divination methods vary by culture and religion.

Divination is often dismissed by sceptics, including the scientific community, as being mere superstition: in the 2nd century, Lucian devoted a witty essay to the career of a charlatan, Alexander the false prophet, trained by "one of those who advertise enchantments, miraculous incantations, charms for your love-affairs, visitations for your enemies, disclosures of buried treasure, and successions to estates"[5], though most Romans believed in dreams and charms. It is considered a sin in most Christian denominations and Judaism.

According to Zohar, Naamah is the mother of divination.

Helpful Hints for Scrying & Divinatory Methods
Remove yourself from :
~Outside noise.
~Mental noise (thoughts)
~Physical distractions (discomfort, other humans, animals etc.)
~Calm and center just like you would for a spell, wait until everything stills and quiets in your mind and surroundings. Now take deep breaths and begin to approach your scrying object (visually…you should already have it ready).

~Relaxation is the key, if you think you see something, DON'T PANIC! Simply breath through it. My first time I panicked. I thought it was just too strange to be happening. Do a mental check…and relax.

Other things that are helpful:
~dim lights/candle
~relax, breath deep
~look through the image, not at it-make sure there are no reflections (or at the least amount you can manage).
~let the image come to you and don't worry if it doesn't come right away (or even your first time out).
~don't panic!~write down any images/feelings/emotions that come to you during your scry

Psychologist Julian Jaynes categorized divination according to the following four types:

* Omens and omen texts. "The most primitive, clumsy, but enduring method...is the simple recording of sequences of unusual or important events." (1976:236) Chinese history offers scrupulously documented occurrences of strange births, the tracking of natural phenomena, and other data. Chinese governmental planning relied on this method of forecasting for long-range strategy. It is not unreasonable to assume that modern scientific inquiry began with this kind of divination; Joseph Needham's work considered this very idea.

* Sortilege (cleromancy). This consists of the casting of lots, or sortes, whether with sticks, stones, bones, beans, coins, or some other item. Modern playing cards and board games developed from this type of divination.

* Augury. Divination that ranks a set of given possibilities. It can be qualitative (such as shapes, proximities, etc.): for example, dowsing (a form of rhabdomancy) developed from this type of divination. The Romans in classical times used Etruscan methods of augury such as hepatoscopy (actually a form of extispicy). Haruspices examined the livers of sacrificed animals. Note that augury is normally considered to specifically refer to divination by studying the flight patterns of birds.

* Spontaneous. An unconstrained form of divination, free from any particular medium, and actually a generalization of all types of divination. The answer comes from whatever object the diviner happens to see or hear. Some religions use a form of bibliomancy: they ask a question, riffle the pages of their holy book, and take as their answer the first passage their eyes light upon. Other forms of spontaneous divination include reading auras and New Age methods of Feng Shui such as "intuitive" and Fuzion.

Crystal balls have been used for scrying for thousands of years. Scrying is the art of looking into a reflective surface, such as glass, water, a mirror, or a crystal, to gain mystical insight.

Most everyone is familiar with the image of a gypsy fortune-teller gazing into her crystal ball and divining someone’s future. Along with this image comes the common misconception that crystal balls have magical powers that enable them to foretell the future.

However, the images seen with a crystal ball aren’t the foretelling of future events, but rather images from deep within one’s subconscious mind, and the crystal ball is the door through which these subconscious thoughts can be accessed. When using a crystal ball, a trance-like state is induced that dissociates one’s consciousness, enabling information from the subconscious to pass through the mind’s eye. It is here the images are seen, not in the crystal itself.

Pendulum chart. Works like a Ouija board. Let the pendulum swing freely over the board. It will spell out messages. Like anything else, it takes a little practice. When working with the Spirit world, always protect yourself. Cast a circle, burn some sage or incense, and when you are done, close portals and clean up lingering energies

Nephelomancy - the art of divination using clouds.

Nephelomancy is a form of aeromancy (divination using atmospheric phenomenon) in which the size, shape, color and movement of a cloud or cloud formation is interpreted. It comes from the ancient belief that clouds with their constatly changing shapes were messages sent from the Gods.
Since interpretation can be so varied, only the basic "how to" will be presented. First decide on a question or problem that you are having difficulty resolving. Next chose a day that has partially clear sky in order to define the shapes of the clouds. Some people prefer to lay on the ground in order to save their neck and get a good view of the sky. Others myself included prefer to use a large bowl that is filled with rain water that reflects the sky like a mirror. After asking your question or stating your dilemma, close your eyes and clear your thoughts. When you are ready, open your eyes and scan the sky/reflection, interrpreting all that you see. Pay attention to the shapes, thickness or thinness of the clouds as well as the direction in which they are moving as well as colors for answers. If you do not feel as if you have received the answers you seek, be patient and keep trying. When finished thank the clouds and meditate on your answers.
Happy cloud watching! ~Cinda

Another way to determine whom you will marry is to use a bowl of water and a flat stick. The bowl should be earthenware and should be filled at least half full of water that has been taken from a flowing stream. A flat stick or piece of wood is then laid across the bowl, from one edge to the other. This represents a bridge over a river or stream.

On the night of a Full Moon, place the bowl of water and stick underneath your bed. Just before you sleep, concentrate your thoughts on an actual footbridge over a stream. Tell yourself that you will dream of it that night. Not only will you dreams of the bridge, but you will dream of yourself crossing the bridge and, halfway over, falling off into the water. But you have no fear, someone will come and rescue you.

With these expectations, built up in your mind throughout the day and then reinforced just before you sleep, you should have no trouble actually having that dream. The trick then is to remember when you wake who it was who came to your rescue and pulled you from the water. That person is your future spouse.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
