2010 in Review: Get Off My Lawn

Momma Kate and babycat Welcome to the second (and hopefully last) installment of me spewing my thoughts and feelings about 2010 onto the screen in clear, frequently obscene words!

Okay, I didn't actually use as many cuss words as I'd thought. But I think I was still pretty clear on the COMPLETE CRAPTASTICNESS of my year.…

Friday Feature: Janadebra

Another on my list of 'I don't even know who this is or how they wound up on my list', but it seemed a natural followup to last week's woodwork, and the work is just as beautiful. But on a totally different scale -- Janadebra's Etsy shop specializes in wooden hair ornaments.

Since I haven't got a lot to say about Janadebra I figure I'll go right to the… Continue

And The New Slogan Is…

Sneak Peek (Pink label with 'Om Shanti Handcrafts', 'Crap Free. Guaranteed.' and text that's cut off as a teaser.) I've been redesigning a lot of my labels (you'll start seeing the new ones soon, once I start taking new photographs of everything I sell...but more on that later...) and took a moment to consider the slogan I've been using on my labels, "100% Natural Ingredients, Always".

...I kinda hate it.

It's accurate, sure. And it's entirely content-free. And bland. And… Continue

The Cycle of Life

By which I mean, not anything profound about death and rebirth or any such, but simply that I've brought back a couple of my favourite soaps.

Green Tea Citrus Soap by Om Shanti Handcrafts I'd originally intended to produce a whole line of Japanese-inspired soaps, most of which didn't wind up working, but the Green Tea Citrus soap was a definite… Continue

2010 in Review: And Stay Out

2010 Sucked. (Red no sign covering over a block print '2010'). So a couple weeks ago I blogged about writing without fear, and then promptly went back to the same sort of stuff I've been writing for two years now.

I blame Riley.

But here's a bit of what I was talking about. Over the month of December I participated in Reverb10, a month's worth of questions… Continue

Friday Feature: Twig Soup

I'm pretty sure I met Kenton Stiles of Twig Soup at some craft show or other back in Colorado -- but it's been so long I plain don't remember. Kind of embarrassing but that's how the world works (and this is why I'm trying to catch up on my backlog of people to feature) so I'll just get on with the meat of it.…

Valhalla's Anvil

Hello all who will read this! Many things have happened in the last year... Most importantly I am in the process of buying a house in Warren, Ohio. Although it is small and cluttered due to the amount of business stuff we have at the moment, it is a house and the utilities are on, even if we are a bit behind at this time.

This Winter my Mentor Johan passed, this is a very…

Kittens and Cats, a Guest Post

True Will and the Inertia of the Universe to Assist

Greetings All,

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law

Over the past 10 years I have been attempting to discover more of my True Will, that essential Purpose and Direction in my Life, through Self-Discovery and Self-Knowledge, as well as through the Expression In Liberty of the True Will, or That, that I understand to be my True Will.

Back around 2000 I started feeling a Drawing, an Attraction to the Ordo Templi Orientis, O.T.O.…

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
