On March 18th at about 11:30AM Joe Dzielak surrounded by his loved ones passed beyond the veil and the Pagan Community of New Jersey is short a pair of really large hands.

Have you ever noticed online, how you can always tell when someone important to people passes? Their messages get shorter. On the Jersey lists today the messages are very short.

For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, Joe Dzielak was the quiet guy who looked like a welder, probably because he was a welder and the fact that he was too busy doing what needed done to
stop and talk. When I think back I still remember seeing his eyes light
up when he talked about what he could do with metal. Joe liked the fact
that he could rely on metal, it was strong, we liked the fact that we
could rely on him he was, "of metal".

Joe was a volunteer at most of the events in New Jersey and if you were ever in need of help, a shadow would pass over you and stuff moved
around, got set up, got taken down, often without words. When I think
back it's kind of funny, if it was anyone else you may have felt
threatened but Joe was a good and selfless man and you just knew you
were in safe hands.

Joe and Charlene were some of the first friends who crawled "out of the woodwork" back in the mid-late 90's when the New Jersey community started to come out in the open and gather together. I
was struck with the old "these are nice people" and "they're serious
too" feelings when I talked to them and as it turned out we all have
become fixtures in the future of New Jersey Paganism and familiar to
each other.

Joe and Charlene were some of the "hands" that helped build what has become one of the strongest communities in the country and anyone who ever
enjoys a gathering in the state should look back a moment to thank the
people who made it happen.

I know that I will see Joe in the future, he has probably run ahead to get things set up for us when we get there, after all there's important work to be done there too. I also know that for right
now it doesn't help, as we miss a man who was a pillar of our community.

The next time we meet Joe, he may look a little different but I know I'll recognize the hands.

Our hearts and the hearts of our Coven go out to Charlene, the family and Hands of Change, we will stand with you and offer our humble hands in his stead.

Part 3: The 500 Hats of Madam Musician

Let's be honest. We had absolutely no money. I had maybe enough to press one thousand CDs and do some minimal marketing (around $3000).
Lucky for us, one of the band members owned a bedroom studio with some
sophisticated equipment, and is normally a producer and engineer. And
here I broke my own rule, and we didn't have a written agreement with
our producer/engineer, partly at his request, and this caused some
problems later on. This also has to do with the fact that we are all
friends, too, and at the time, a vague verbal agreement seemed adequate.
In all likelihood, if he had told me how much it was going to cost to
record, the project would have stalled right then and there.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

I will be the first to admit that we broke a rule when we recorded, and that was because of the fact that one of us owned the
recording studio. We did do some writing in the studio. We finished the
lyrics, melody and general structure of the song, but we went into the
studio cold and with no or minimal rehearsal before we started laying
down tracks. So we weren't as efficient with our studio time as we could
have been. And so I declare

Music Biz Rule Number 3: PRACTICE! You should be able to play all your material in your sleep!

I had been in the studio before, recording demos. Demos for bands I was in so we could get gigs and demos as a songwriter to try to sell the
songs (or get the fabled record contract). The most I ever did was 4
songs, and I was a neophyte and let the engineer produce. I told him
what sound I wanted and he did it or something close, or if he had an
idea, I would let him go with it, and it turned out very nicely, even if
I didn't hear it that way when I had written the song.

This time the engineer was in the band, and was a co-writer, and a co-producer. Almost ten years had gone by since my last studio
experience, and I had some definite ideas of what I wanted on the album.
I took a page from Hollywood: since it was my cold, hard cash that was
financing this project, I became the Executive Producer, which meant
that I was ultimately responsible for the entire project. This included
scheduling, and attending every recording session, even if I wasn't
playing or singing that night.

There are many jobs that need to be done when your band is recording an album. Someone has to make sure all these little details
are covered Since I was the Executive Producer, and no one else was
stepping up to the plate, all these things fell to me:

Scheduling of recording sessions and musicians. This meant booking time in the studio and making sure that the musicians were
available to play and that they knew their parts. Of course in reality,
this didn't work as smoothly as it sounds. I decided that having "guest
guitarists" play lead guitar on different tracks would be a cool thing.
One of them lived 2000 miles away. It was an interesting experience
finding a studio over the phone and coordinating everything down to
sending a rough mix of the rhythm tracks on ADAT overnight mail. And of
course, my out of state friend's life decided to get completely out of
control just then, and she couldn't record the tracks.

Provide a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for the performers. If you are freaking out or stressed, and your players know it, they are
going to be nervous too and you're not going to get the best out of
them. Know when to get out of the way, or have a trusted friend gently
remind you. You can come back in the studio and hear what's been done
later after you've calmed down.

Attending every recording session to make sure the tracks are being done properly. Even if you aren't playing in that session. I do
admit that I was unable to do this, and none of the other band members
were comfortable enough to make decisions. Even when I wasn't there in
person, I was there on the phone. I had to decide things like whether to
use tracks recorded in less than optimal conditions, or wait two weeks
until that player was available. And sometimes the decisions are hard.
Do you let the release date of the album slide out one month? Two
months? Will that make you miss the holiday buying season? Or do you go
with what you've got and get something out?

Attending the mixdown. If the final sound of your album matters to you, be there for the mix. The mix can make or break a song. Lots of
problems with recording can be fixed in the mix, and many engineers will
tell you that, especially if you are not happy with a recording you
just made. If you've got the time and the stamina however, do a retake.
The cleaner your original tracks are, the better the final product will
be. There are limits to what you really can fix in the mix.

And please, please, make sure you have your tracks put on some kind of stable media (like tape). A hard disk is only good until it
crashes. And it will crash at some point. Back up your data, or be
prepared to start all over again. If your studio uses hard disk
recording instead of tape, make sure that all your files are backed up
to another media. Things to request include backing up to a different
physical hard drive (not another partition on the same disk!), CD-ROM,
digital audio tape, or analog tape. Make sure it's in your contract with
your engineer. Anyone who has any length of experience with computers
knows that hard disk storage is not permanent. It's a matter of time
before the hard drive becomes damaged in some way. Yes, you can get
lucky and get 5 or even 10 years out of a hard drive, but play
pessimist, please. Assume that the disk will crash right after you've
done a rough mix, and that all your tracks will be gone. It's been known
to happen. So here is

Computer rule number 1: MAKE BACKUPS!

And while you are recording and doing all of that stuff, don't forget about packaging. The big companies have staff that takes care of all of
this for you, and many CD manufacturers also have staff that can handle
these jobs as well, and for pretty reasonable fees. However, being the
masochist that I am, I took on all of this stuff as well.

Cover concept and execution. This is what a potential buyer will see and it will factor into whether they purchase your CD or not,
especially if they haven't heard of you or heard the songs on the album.
The graphics and text should relate in some way to your music. Both
music and art evoke emotional reactions from people. The emotions should
be consistent (for instance, you probably won't see a fuzzy kitten in a
basket of yarn on a thrash band's CD cover). You want your listeners to
enjoy the music, and believe that their money was well spent. So
hopefully, they'll tell everyone they know how great your CD is, and go
and buy it.

Typesetting and layout for the insert, Jewel case tray card and CD itself. This can be a lot of work if you are not trained in graphic
arts. The look of your packaging is the listener's first impression. It
is well worth the couple of hundred dollars (if you have it) to have a
professional lay out your artwork and text. They know the formats for
the printer, and all the details like color separations, registration
marks, file formats, etc. Make sure that your proof prints are exactly
what you want, and that there are no defects. You will be asked to
approve them before production.

Photos of the band. These are very important. What is the purpose of the band photo? Are you putting it in the CD? Are you handing
our 8 by 10 glossies to fans? Are you making a press kit? If you can
afford a professional photographer it can be well worth the results.

Selection of manufacturer. Choosing a good CD manufacturer with a proven track record is really important. I say this only because I went
with someone I never heard of, because a good friend was working for
them at the time, and they undercut a market leader by a few hundred
dollars. What should have taken two to three weeks took four months.
Because of this delay, we missed out on many marketing and sales
opportunities. After being burned like this, I will say that you
basically get what you pay for. In retrospect, I should have cancelled
the job when they laid off my friend (which they did at the beginning).
Also, be aware that the time period from September to November is very
busy for CD manufacturers. That is when they start producing high volume
Christmas sales items, and small jobs get pushed aside.

Obtaining permission to use copyrighted material. You actually should have these before you start recording (because if you don't get
them, why spend money and time recording something you can't use?). You
can contact the publisher of the music, the performance society (such as
ASCAP), or the author him/herself for permission. You should get it in
writing, and make whatever royalty arrangements you need to make in
writing as well. If you don't know who wrote something, you can check
the copyright archives on line.

And because I didn't have enough to do, I started preliminary marketing in the form of the band's website. I admit that I really enjoy
doing websites, so it wasn't what I would call a hardship. There is a
lot to know about how to make a site good looking and also easy to use.
More than is appropriate for me to tell you here. All I will say for now
is that you can put a website up for little or no money, and every band
should have one.

Part 2: Planting Seeds

You drop little seeds as you travel through life. A word here, a
kindness there, and you move on, oblivious. But the Universe isn't
oblivious. Some of these seeds take root and grow. (Sometimes these
seeds are not planted in kindness, and the fruit that these plants bear
can come back to trouble you. So plant with care, forethought, and
awareness.) I didn't know it at the time, but I was planting seeds among
the local Goddess community. I attended local rituals and celebrations,
met new people and made new friends. Many times we would form
spontaneous drum circles, or just play, since there were quite a few
people who were musicians. Sharing in that way, just playing and giving
were the seeds that I planted. We discovered that we could make music
together. The fruits of these seeds answered me when I put out the call.

Ironically, the responses I received when I put the word out that I was
starting a recording project were overwhelmingly male. So be it. The
door to my band is never closed, and perhaps some day I will make music
with some women, but for now, it's me and "the guys".

I work in the corporate world. I am a cog in the great machine of
business and technology. I have been modestly successful, and I have
learned about being part of a group and leading groups to achieve a
certain goal. Some of the things I've learned are highly applicable to
working in a band and making a record.

I required a commitment from my men, and I gave the same: a year and a
day. A year and a day is a significant length of time in the Pagan
traditions that I follow. We sat down at the table and talked business
before we ever played a note together as a band. We put stuff in writing
so that there would be no confusion later. At least we thought so at
the time. If you don't get lawyers involved, there always seems to be a
loose end or two when you get done.

I have heard enough analogies that a band is like a family, and I
suppose that sometimes it is. I didn't want to follow that model for the
band, because that would make me the Mommy, and I already have that job
at home, thank you very much. So I made the analogy that a family is
like a company, and we will run the band like a business. If that makes
me the boss, well, at least that's better than the Mommy. Bosses don't
change diapers.

Let's think about the band/company analogy for a moment. A band is a
business proposition. We were together to create something. We were
together to make something. We were together to work. The songs we were
composing together become real, tangible, intellectual property
with an intrinsic material value (a commodity). Whether someone would be
willing to pay money for it was still a matter of conjecture, but there
are legal and financial ramifications when a group of people agree to
do this sort of creative work together. We were all mature, grown-ups
who had been through the music mill for a number of years in a variety
of roles. None of us were music virgins. So it was important to iron out
the business details first.

First we laid the ground rules regarding writing. The rule we followed is described in "The Songwriter's Guide to Collaboration," by Walter Carter (Writer's Digest Books). Simply: whoever is in the room while a song is being written is a co-writer.
This is because you don't know where or from whom the inspiration for
that great lyric or melody will come from. It could be someone sitting
on the couch talking about something completely unrelated that triggers a
memory or a flash of insight in you. If they weren't there, would you
have thought of it? Also, from a practical standpoint, it keeps gawkers
and girlfriends out of the writing sessions (yes it could be boyfriends,
too, but "boyfriend" doesn't alliterate with "gawker") if you know
you're going to be cutting them in on the copyright and royalties. Which
brings me to

Music Biz Rule Number 2: PUT IT IN WRITITNG.

Whatever rules you and your band decide to follow is fine as long as

everyone agrees, and you then follow your rules. That's what writing
things down does for you. And if you still have trouble, post what you
wrote on the wall so you can see it.

Then we set a goal. It is important for the group to have a goal. The
goal doesn't have to be achievable in the short term, but if it is, or
if it is perceived to be achievable, it helps keep people
focused. The job of the leader is to keep people focused and then get
out of their way. I think our first year's goal was pretty reasonable:
"Let's put a CD out in a year." And we focused on that.

We scoured our existing collections of music to see if we had anything
that would be appropriate to add to the album. There were a few songs
from the past that we wanted to record, and there were others available
as back-up.

Then we started writing. I had a vision for our first CD, and I started a
bunch of songs, and finished others that I had started earlier. We
wrote together and separately, in pairs, trios and the whole quartet.

Then it was time to record.
http://www.musicforthegoddess.com/fanclub/wannabe2.html
A five-part series about music and business and the music
business. All persons and events are fictitious even if they are not.
Names and events have been modified significantly to make them funnier.
Even if they are not.

Part 1: Big Ideas

The lights. Standing on stage looking at the sea of faces. Heart pounding. Terrified. Elated. Worried that I'll forget all the lyrics,
even though I wrote them. That I'll trip over a cable. That my voice
will crack. Having the best fucking time in the whole world. That's the high.

I did feel the high once. The high is the feeling that you are exactly in the right place at the right time doing exactly what you were born to do. When you get the high,
it shows. You glow with your inner light. You smile, and everyone
watching you can see you are having an incredible time playing for them.
The high is infectious. It leaks off of the stage and onto the audience.

At least that's what I think it'll be like. I've never played to a large
crowd. Well, maybe once, if you count Louis Wu's Birthday party (yeah,
that was me in the "Tokyo with Mirrorshades" room, dressed as the
cyberpunk Geisha) at Boskone 3. That crowd was about 300 people or so.

I felt the high in a bar in Bound Brook, New Jersey. The place
was a dive, but they had a stage, and we had a band, and we sounded
pretty good, and we had a future. Or so I thought. I thought the four of
us were friends. I thought we were a good writing team. I thought that
two women fronting the band, one on guitar and one on keys was unique at
the time; it was our hook, our in, our… wait a minute…

I guess I was too enthusiastic. Too happy. Too good. Roze Budd, the
blonde guitarist, started dating the drummer. All of a sudden, they
decided that the brunette with the cleavage (me) was excess baggage, and
what had I done for the band this week, anyway? A secret booking and a
phone call later, and I was on my own.

That's the lot of the female musician. Probably lots of male musicians,
too, but I'm a fem, so I can only speak for myself. If you're a chick
looking for a band or people to jam with, this is what you can expect
when you answer ads in the local Rock tabloid:

"We're not looking for a girlfriend."

"Can you bring a nightgown to the audition?"

"Our girlfriends would never let us have a girl in the band because we'd all end up sleeping with you."

"Are you willing to dance topless?"

It didn't matter that I could play. It didn't matter that I could sing. I felt frustrated and humiliated and somehow inadequate. You keep
telling yourself that it's "them" - "they" have the problem, not you.
You have to keep on looking. And of course, I did. And from this, I
learned

Music Biz Rule Number 1: NEVER GIVE UP.

I kept dreaming my dreams of the high. I kept writing songs. I collaborated with fine musicians and excellent guitarists. I dated bass players (that was a big mistake). I jammed every chance I got.

At the same time, I was exploring my spirituality. And I got my BIG IDEA. I had been told many times that I would be successful when I
was working for things greater than myself; that if I was selfish I
would fail. And I had many selfish failures. I was told that the more
you want something, the more elusive it becomes; that when you stopped wanting it would just come to you. This is one of the hardest things to practice.

Think about it. You are alone, you crave companionship, you desire a
lover. It eats at you like a heroin jones. It consumes your thoughts,
your actions. You are desperate. The desperation is visible for all to
see. And anyone who would be your companion is scared off, or turned
off, and they stay away. The only ones you meet are the sharks that feed
on your desperation, taking your love, your time, your money, anything
they can get their hands on.

Of course, this had happed to me, and eventually, I got burnt out and disgusted with the whole thing, and I didn't want a relationship. And guess what happened. I met someone. And because I wasn't desperate,
because I wasn't in need, it actually worked out. Amazing.

So back to my BIG IDEA. I was going to put a project together whose goal was not to get a record deal, was not to be the Next Big Thing. I put an ad in the music paper:

SACRED MUSIC FOR THE GODDESS. Wicca/Pagan band forming. Looking for guitar, bass, drums, strings, woodwinds, brass.
Electric/eclectic, all styles, genders welcome, etc., etc., blah blah
blah.

The idea was the Music. The idea was to Create, to Provoke, to Glorify the Sacred. Money didn't enter into it. The goal was to Make
some Music. That was my BIG IDEA. I didn't care if we were popular. I
didn't care if we became famous. I didn't care if we made a profit.

And I didn't have a name for the band. Sacred Music for the Goddess was
what we were going to be doing. And then a drummer called about the ad,
and thought that Music for the Goddess was the band's name. And a
guitarist did the same. And I thought "Why not? Music for the Goddess, so be it."

I saw my path stretching out before me. A glorious adventure awaited me. I adjusted the burdens that I always carry onto my back, and
I started forth.

Their second album, Dancing With Hecate, features 10 tracks, including
dance tunes, celtic rock, folk, hard rock, jazz, blues and a power
ballad.

Their debut album,
Goddess Mandala, provides one hour of music that has something for
everyone, and has almost sold out of their first pressing.

Round and Round

Wendy Sheridan writes: I was
drumming in a drum frenzy at a Beltane party, and after 3 or so hours of
drumming, my spirit was transported to this place in a magical forest
where there was a bonfire and dancers, and all manner of things. This
song commemorates that experience, and incorporates elements from the
closing of our Wiccan rituals. We say "The circle is open, but never
broken. Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again. Blessed be."

Calling the Quarters

This is a song of invocation. In the
opening of a Wiccan ritual the four directions (East, South, West and
North) and elements (Air, Fire, Water, Earth) are called to join the
circle as the candles are lit. You are also invited into the circle with
the Goddess and the God in Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.

Guest guitarist Jim Incollingo adds his bluesy melodies to the endeavor.

In the Belly of the Mother

This song commemorates the major Sabbat of
Imbolc (the return of the sun). This Sabbat occurs on February 2nd every
year. It is a time for cleansing and celebration, for we notice that
the days are getting longer, and spring will soon be here. It is the
festival of the Goddess Brigit, patroness of poets, bards, and
musicians, Goddess of the fire: candles, forges and the internal fires
of creativity, Protector of pregnant women, midwives and women in labor.
We dedicate this song to Her.

In the Belly of the Mother features Rich Sheridan on lead vocals.

On Eventide of May

This previously unrecorded work is from
Daxe's catalog, written by Daxe and Michelle Augustyniak. Beltane, or
the Rites of Spring, is a fertility festival. It is the celebration of
the Sacred Marriage of the God and the Goddess. It is the time of
planting in the fields. The celebrations can be wild and passionate. And
sometimes there is a price to pay.

Wendy Sheridan sings lead vocals on this track.

When Gaia Wears Purple

Another song of Daxe's from his "One Vote Zygote" CD. We just had to do our version of it. The Old Womyn of the Forest shows off her creativity.

Shaman's Dreams

This instrumental peice is a rythmic excursion from the brains of Daxe and Vonorn. A different version of this song appears on the Daxe CD "God Doesn't Play with Dice".

Wizardwood

This is a song about an initiation. It is not based on any particular Wiccan or Pagan
tradition. Rather, it is a metaphor for self-discovery and personal and spiritual growth.
The theme of spending some time alone in a sacred place where you confront yourself and
learn to come to grips with your dark side is a universal one.

Rich Sheridan is the featured vocalist on this track, and guest artist Bruce Katz provides the wonderful guitar work. (Bruce and Rich performed together in the
original heavy metal band Axcelerator - Click here for Air Raid, by Axcelerator).

Baby I'm Falling

The Wizard from the previous song is ready to return to the "mundane" world and find the magic that is part of everyday living. This song was written as an admission and question
to a new love. It is unabashed pop from the song catalog of Wendy
Sheridan and Bob Lame.

Bob Lame plays guitar on this one.

Miles Before Dawn

Can you remember a time when all you wanted to do was stay up all night with someone and just
feel good? When you weren't looking for a relationship or a commitment?
Then this song (another from the Sheridan/Lame catalog) is for you.
(Wendy wants to point out that she loves horn sections - even if they
come from a module).

Guest guitarist Bob Lame appears on this track.

Love Has Nine Lives

When everything is dark, this song reminds us that there is light at the end of the tunnel. It was written in the aftermath of a very intense relationship. From the songwriting
duo of Sheridan/Lame.

Bob Lame plays guitar on this track as well.

We think no one has attempted something
quite like this since the "album sides" of the 70's. During the fifteen
minutes of this work, you will hear some familiar Pagan chants, and some
melodies that appear in other songs of this album. We also invoke the
names of over 150 Goddesses
uncovered with the assistance of "Goddesses in World Mythology, a

The earliest known author of written literature was a woman named Enheduanna, who lived in ancient Mesopotamia around 2300 BCE. High
Priestess to the moon god Nanna, Enheduanna came to venerate the goddess
Inanna above all gods in the Sumerian pantheon. The hymns she wrote to
Inanna constitute the earliest written portrayal of an ancient goddess.
In their celebration of Enheduanna's relationship with Inanna, they also
represent the first existing account of an individual's consciousness
of her inner life.

This book provides the complete texts of Enheduanna's hymns to Inanna, skillfully and beautifully rendered by
Betty De Shong Meador, who also discusses how the poems reflect
Enheduanna's own spiritual and psychological liberation from being an
obedient daughter in the shadow of her ruler father. Meador frames the
poems with background information on the religious and cultural systems
of ancient Mesopotamia and the known facts of Enheduanna's life. With
this information, she explores the role of Inanna as the archetypal
feminine, the first goddess who encompasses both the celestial and the
earthly and shows forth the full scope of women's potential.

Betty De Shong Meador is a Jungian analyst in private practice, who also teaches at the California Institute of Integral Studies and at New
College, both in San Francisco, and at Pacifica Graduate Institute in
Santa Barbara.

I saw your body laid to rest, I knew you weren't there
You left this place some days before, a spirit in the air
Tonight we get together while you visit Summerland
We hope that we will meet again and then walk hand in hand

And we will tell your stories and we will sing your songs
And we will still remember you long after you are gone
For we have been together as we are now apart
And you are with me always since I keep you in my heart

I've known you just a little while, I've known you all my life
You brought me into this world, you comfort me in strife
You've been many things to many people, you've always played your parts
You travel now in Summerland, thought you're alive in all our hearts

And we will tell your stories and we will sing your songs
And we will still remember you long after you are gone
For we have been together as we are now apart
And you are with me always since I keep you in my heart

We miss you friend, child and lover, miss you sister miss you mother
(alternate lyrics:We miss you husband, son and brother, miss you father miss you lover)
We miss you so much now that you are gone, leaving all of us to carry on

And we will tell your stories and we will sing your songs
And we will still remember you long after you are gone
For we have been together as we are now apart
And you are with me always since I keep you in my heart

<RANT>
We are a totally self-supported endeavor. We all have "day jobs." Some of us have families (who didn't get to see us much while we were
making this CD). All of us love music. The current status quo of MTV and
the major labels is going to change. With the internet, and your
support, musical decisions are NOT going to be based on the decisions of
a few decrepit bean counters in Manhattan or LA. Recording deals are
NOT going to be made in the bedrooms of producers. This band will only
be successful because YOU liked what you heard enough to buy our CD. And
YOU show your SUPPORT by buying and wearing our t-shirt, and telling
your friends about us.
