On Monday, June 4, the earth's shadow will fall across the moon giving us our first lunar eclipse this year. It will be just a partial eclipse, shadowing about a third of the moon. Here in the U.S., the west coast will get the best view, but our friends in Australia will probably see her just fine.

Here is a table of times and a graphic of what is occurring:

Lunar eclipses are sort of like energy reboots wherein the earth disrupts the connection for a while and then a new one occurs when the shadow is gone. If you've ever been kissing your sweetie and one of the kids wiggles in between, you know that you don't continue the same kiss after that , you start a new one. Same, same. So, ask yourself what you'd like to reset? It can be anything, habits, ideas, relationships, anything. This is a good time to push the reset button.

If you want to look a bit closer at what is going on in the sky (and you know that I will), consider that the full moon is in Sagittarius and the sun is in Gemini. Lunar eclipses always create this interruption of opposites because the sun and moon need to be at 180 degrees for the earth to intervene. Anyway, mercurial Gemini asserts "I think" while Sagittarius calmly whispers from Jupiter's shadows, "I see." Intellect vs. Wisdom. To me this is a call to examine beliefs, and not necessarily religious beliefs, but given these alignments quite probably hidden matters.

Let's scratch a little deeper. The moon is in the 6th house, and the sun is in the 12th, of course. Keeping the sun company in the 12th house are Mercury, Venus, and Sagittarius' ruler, Jupiter. The sixth house deals with health and service -- habits and daily routines are found here. The 12th house is the house of illusion where we find dreams, hidden talents, psychic phenomena, and also hidden enemies. The 12th house is loaded up for this eclipse -- communication, relationships, development, and your public self in the house of illusion vs. your emotional, intuitive self in the house of health and service.

Partial Eclipse of the Strawberry Moon

By Dr. Tony Phillips, NASA Science News, May 30, 2012

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.

On June 4th, 2012, there's going to be a full Moon. According to Native American folklore it's the Strawberry Moon, so-called because the short season for harvesting strawberries comes during the month of June. This Strawberry's going to have a bite taken out of it.

At 3:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, not long before sunrise on Monday, June 4th, the Moon passes directly behind our planet. A broad stretch of lunar terrain around the southern crater Tycho will fall under the shadow of Earth, producing the first lunar eclipse of 2012. At maximum eclipse, around 4:04 a.m. (PDT), 37% of the Moon's surface will be in the dark.

Because only a fraction of the Strawberry Moon is shadowed, astronomers call this a partial eclipse. But it's totally beautiful.

The eclipse is visible in North and South America, Australia, eastern parts of Asia and all across the Pacific Ocean. On the Atlantic side of the United States, the eclipse occurs just as the Moon is setting in the west - perfect timing for the Moon illusion.

For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging Moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings and other foreground objects. In fact, a low Moon is no wider than any other Moon - cameras prove it - but the human brain insists otherwise.

The eclipsed moon, hanging low in the west at daybreak on June 4th, will seem extra-large to US observers east of the Mississippi. The fact that the extra size is just an illusion in no way detracts from its visual appeal.

The sun-Earth-Moon alignment that causes this eclipse is the second of three rapid-fire celestial line-ups. First there was the annular solar eclipse of May 20th, when the Moon moved between Earth and the sun to turn our star into a "ring of fire."

The lunar eclipse of June 4th reverses the order of the Earth and moon, so that the moon is eclipsed instead of the sun. Finally, we have the transit of Venus on June 5th and 6th , when the second planet moves directly between the Earth and sun.

Backyard astronomy doesn't get much better than this.

Wake up before dawn on June 4th and savor the sweet eclipse of the Strawberry Moon.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries.

Vendertainers that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.

As well as being a place where the older hand made items could be found made by them and enjoyed by all.

We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.

Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.

Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are re-enactors, SCAdians and the like, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.

Likewise, it is typical for these history-lovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"

A deceitful query!! This is not a yes or no question. One must have a damn good understanding of European history (at least) from the fall of Rome to the mid-1600's to properly answer. Taking into account, also, the culture in which the querent is dressed is vitally important. You see, though it may be well within medieval period, it would be strange to see a Viking wearing a Caftan...or is it?

After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge...

Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and re-enactment hobbyists, their clientele.
